I often choke while drinking fluids (usually water, as that is mostly what I drink) when I'm not paying attention.  I've had to learn to drink very carefully.

I have some esophagus issues too, so I don't know if that is part of it but many times I've had to 'bring up' foods I've tried to eat that won't go down, once they get down to the esophagus, usually something bready or meat.

One thing that helps is listening to your body and I guess you kind of learn what you can and can't do.  but choking while drinking is really awful so I have gotten much more careful!  Smiley Happy

I drink mostly water also.  Once in a while lemon iced tea.  The episode I had the other night was with water and it was the longest one I ever had.  My daughter had just left, in fact, I heard her key turning the lock on the front door.  But there was no way she could hear me and no way I could get to the front door.

I was really seeing "stars" and thought I was going pass out.  It's a scary thing.  I am also being much more careful.  I did a lot of research the next day.

I used to have sleep apnea as a young woman.  I think it was hormonal as I haven't had it for years and don't think there's a connection.

@LilacTree  Oh please try to be careful!  I choke pretty often, but I've never had an episode where I thought I was going to pass out.  For me it's all about getting the stuff out of my lungs.

That's the thing with me, @2blonde, I never feel there is anything in my esophagus or in my lungs.  I think the water goes down and then my throat muscles spasm and I can't get any air.

Yes, I'm being more careful, and thank you!

@LilacTree  You know, that IS different, and it sound scarier to me because I don't think you have any control over the spasms that you refer to.  I really think (if you haven't done so) you should bring this up to your doctor, and make sure you describe it the same as you have here.  If there is no food or liquid actually lodged anywhere in you throat or lungs, then I don't see how you can control this just by being more careful when drinking liquids.  On a higher note, I don't think it could ever (God forbid) kill you, because if you passed out, the muscle spasm would cease.

@2blonde  That's what a lot of the info said during my research, so I'd have to make sure I'm either sitting or lying down because if I ever fell on the floor, I wouldn't be able to get up (because of my spinal issues).

I can choke on larger ground black pepper.  It seems to scratch my throat.

@MalteseMomma  I do have a regular appt coming up and I will mention it to her.  I don't know if I ever did because it was such a long time between attacks.  : ) : )

I often choke on peanut butter as I am a PB junkie and eat it by the spoonfuls, sometimes I put too much on my spoon or I am eating it too fast. It is painful and I cannot breathe cause I am clogged up with PB. I know  I  need to be careful. Most of the time it is the middle of the night and I am alone. Water helps.

Oh how awfull, for him of course, and you.

@Tinkrbl44 I do the same thing with PB -- by the spoonful, but I am mindful! A friend of mine's son choked on a glob of PB, passed out and ended up permanently disabled.

When you live alone, it's problematic!

I've had a few episodes choking on my beverage. It's a very scary thing- especially if you're alone. I'll have to try to remember your tip to cover the mouth & breath through nose.

@MalteseMomma- so sorry to hear about your Father. I can't even imagine what it would be like to witness that. Please be careful eating that PB.
