Broken Jaw - What do you know?

Neighbor lady -- mid 40's - had a bad accident Saturday unhitching a new camper to truck.  No prior experience.

Some metal section dropped down faster  than she expected - ambulance called..

broken jaw bone - dislocated bones/jaw under ear section - lost 3 teeth.

Google shows me unpleasant pictures but wondered if your life experiences knows what to expect in way of healing.  Liquid diet but, thankfully, they didn't wire her jaw shut.

Big camper on hold - brand new but some family members want to just get rid of it...........lots of discussions I'm sure.

Re: Broken Jaw - What do you know?

Ouch!  That sounds so painful.  I wonder if she has a fifth wheel.   A woman I was talking to recently is traveling in a truck with a trailer and  three dogs..... exploring our country.  She said she tried a fifth wheel and couldn't handle the weight of the connector.

Your neighbor lady will be dealing with these injuries for a while, especially with three teeth missing.  Let's hope for a speedy recovery and safe journeys for her in the future.

Re: Broken Jaw - What do you know?

She's so lucky they didn't wire her jaw shut!

Our youngest son was hit (by a drunk driver).  He and his friend who was driving were wearing seat belts, but the dashboard buckled into a point and smashed the entire left side of our son's face.

His jaw was broken in three places.  Twice on one side and one bad break on the other side.

His facial injuries were so severe that they had to wait for swelling to go down for about 3 days before they could re-set jaw.  He has metal plates permanently and had to have his jaw wired for almost 3 months.  It was a long time to have your jaws wired.

I would've gone insane the entire time, but he took it pretty darn good.  He was glad to be alive.  A person in the other vehicle didn't make it.

Liquid diet and he was always on the skinny side, so he got really thin.

Your neighbor is so lucky to NOT have the wires.  They gave us wire cutters at the hospital just in case G-D forbid, we needed to cut them open in an emergency.

His teeth which were aligned perfectly before, now look like the NY skyline on the bottom row, but he didn't lose any teeth, thankfully.  We offered to get him braces (he was in college at the time and never needed them before, but the ordeal was a bit much and he always declined.

What a freak accident your neighbor had!

I've heard of people having broken necks and not needing anything more than a neck brace and my poor dad of course had to have a *halo* screwed into his scull for an unbelievably long amount of time.  Ugh.

Re: Broken Jaw - What do you know?

Two weeks ago I was out for a walk and tripped on a broken sidewalk and fell on my chin.  I swore I broke my jaw the pain was so bad.  I walked all the way back home bleeding from my chin and hand (which both needed stitches).  I drove myself to emergent-care.  Asked if they were going to x-ray the jaw.  She said no, it wasn't necessary.  Her supervisor came in afterwards.  Said I should have it x-rayed.  My jaw and ear hurt soooo bad but they would not prescribe me any pain killers.  I immediately left and called my dentist.  I recently had $10,000 of work done and my bite was off.  They said to come in.  They did an xray and said nothing was broken.  They did provide a light pain-killer and an antibiotic for a tooth it may have need for future work.  It still hurts and I have difficulty eating and chewing.  My ear hurts still.  I may follow-up with an ENT.  I would feel better if they did a CAT scan to see if there was any damage to my ear.

@Lucky Charm   What a horrendous story.  I am so sorry that your family has had to experience these life threatening procedures. I can't imagine the strength and courage it took to survive the months of pain and grief.  Thankfully they made it through.

Thank you for your information.......one and all

Assume it will be multi-levels of healing.....over time.

The family saved $ for anotther year to buy a camper......and then this.

@rms1954   That was a bad fall!  I would definitely call an ENT and hopefully they'll do a CAT scan.

When I went for my first visit earlier this year due to hearing loss, they ordered an MRI.

I don't know which is a better *picture*,  but I'm sure the ENT will really look into it.

I hope you start to feel better soon!

It was bad.  It was my worst fear come true as my health is declining.  You're so sweet and kind.  A Lucky Charm for sure.

Re: Broken Jaw - What do you know?

Been there, done that.  It was fifty years ago, (almost to the day) that I was hit by a drunk driver head on and suffered a broken jaw along with lots of bruises and a concussion.  I was wired shut for six weeks, liquid diet.  I learned to put eveything through the blender to drink through a straw.  I still have problems with it occassionally coming out of alignment, I wore a mouth piece for many years to keep it aligned but tired of that about 15 years ago.
