Kathy--I had a choice as to what kind of surgery I had on my "bad" breast. Could have had both removed but chose not to, altho I wish I had. One breast is really a pain to live with. My surgeon and I went over the pros and cons of each type of surgery and she agreed that either one was a valid answer. Of course had I had what you did in your other breast, my decision would have been like yours. I got to make several choices regarding just about everything during my 10 month ordeal. Cancers are all different for everyone and so are the treatment plans. I hope you are doing well. There is a cancer survivors boards here that you might be interested in. Lots of good info and support.

UPDATE:
I went with her for her second opinion appointment. It was with a breast specialist. Unfortunately, she couldn't confirm the negative biopsy findings. She said she absolutely sees what the one doctor saw that diagnosed the cancer. She said the mammo is bad and definitely reads malignancy the way the calcifications are patterned together. However, she said you just don't diagnose someone without a biopsy result.
She did say there is still a chance, a good chance, that this is benign but when you have a mammo and biopsy finding so opposite of each other, you have to go a step further. She is going to perform a stereotactic mammogram with biopsy and pull tissue from the absolute worst looking area. If that comes back negative, this ordeal will be over.

This is a terrible ordeal for your friend. I hope she gets good news very soon. It must be horrible being bounced back and forth like this.

drs can sometimes tell by how it looks that it is probably cancer....but they never tell the patient! doesn't sound professional at all to make a diagnosis based on what is nothing more than a "hunch" until it is confirmed by a biopsy and more testing. She should have a sonogram as well. A colleague was told she had " a little area" on her sonogram but the dr was sure "it was fine because he could tell by how it looks". A biopsy was only done because she insisted. It was a rare, aggressive form of cancer...think of the time she would have lost if she had not insisted on the biopsy.
