I had surgery on Monday 11/18. General anesthesia. I have had 3 oher major surgeries with General and came out fine.
48 hours gone by Just cannot kick this brain fog. Its so bad feel like everything I do is slow motion. It's like a very horrible bad NY EVE hangover without the heaves.
tried calling my surgeon's office to ask what they gave me, but they could not (or would not ) give any information other than Versed. sus that was all - was under for 3 hours I csn see from the surgeons notes, they don't add in the notes what the " Dr.Painless" guys give.
Scared that this is my new normal. Anyone here have brain fog after surgery? Did you feel better after a few days. Dr offfice said drink lots of water - i do and have mostly chicken soup because my throat is sore from the intubation.

No brain fog, but I know that after my 2 colonoscopies I was sent home with a paper listing everything that was given to me as far as the anesthesia. You should have every right to know.

@Shelbelle My husband had terrible brain fog for about an hour. He kept offering to buy me ANY jewelry in the world that I wanted because I am such a WONDERFUL wife. I distracted him with a barbecue rib dinner and he'd come out of it before the peach cobbler was served.

foxywoods,
I'm sorry that you had to have several major surgeries and hope that you won't have to have anymore.
I too had severe brain fog along with feeling exactly like you said with feeling like it's a horrible hangover without having any alcohol, feeling totally listless and just plain sick.
I called the ER and explained my symptoms and they had me come in right away. When I gto there they checked my surgical records and put me on an IV right away for dehydration. I too was drinking liquids as insructed, however it was not helping until I was given hydration at the ER. I was there several hours before I started feeling better. So for me it was the fact of being dehydrated from the medication given during my surgery.
At one time I was hospitalized after a minor surgery due to the type of anesthesia I was given which of course I can't remember. The time I went to ER was when it showed that I was given Versed & another medication that I can't remember right now. When I had to go in for another minor surgery I made it a point to let them know what happed after the other surgeries and they noted it and then gave me Propofal (sp). I had no post reaction from that.
I hope that if you aren't feeling well that you would call or just go into your local ER to have them check you out. A lot of people don't have any post surgical reactions, but there are some of us that do and it's really awful and scary. It did take me a few days before I felt like I was somewhat normal. Not sure what normal feels like, but at least I felt like I was back in my so called normal.
Hopeing you don't feel like a bother calling the ER. I did, but forced myself and am glad I did as dehydration can cause some serious medical problems such as irregular heart rythmn etc. Don't want to scare you, but am concerned for you.

@foxywoods my husband has had many of both upper and lower gi for years they used versed and fentanyl for the endoscopy which was fine for that short procedure
he then had a long oral surgery where he wasn't sure what was used and he felt the same thing you are describing
his nephew is an anesthesiologist and told him it was probably caused by the fentanyl so he now has listed on his medical records no fentanyl
i have had 13 abdominal surgeries all under general anesthesia the anesthesiologist talked with me before each and every one and explained the anesthesia and asked if i had a problem with the type he was using which was a general anesthesia called propofol
wondering why pre surgery you were not told about what was going to be used

You should come out of it in a few days. My son just had a three hour surgery for a kidney stone and even in his twentys it took a few days. He took milk thistle to detox his liver from the side effects and a good probiotic. He felt very tired for a week and found it hard to focus. Getting in the sun is also a good idea if you can. Hopefully you feel better soon.

@foxywoods I had my knee replaced in 2019, a 1.5 hr surgery and definitely had "brain fog" for about a week afterward. I wouldn't say it was severe but I definitely wan't not my normal mentally sharp self.

@mrshckynut no, the anesthesioligist just swung by for A MINUTE and asked about issues with anestheisa in the past. asked for zofran. yes, then he put a patch behind my ear used for sea sickness.
I do not remember anything beyond that point, since there was no IV while in pre-op have no idea how they sedated me.

@Silhouettes shadow that was puzzling me too that there was no IV in pre-op . the nurses tied a butterfly (?) inciosn with tubes for the IVs but no IV was connected. not sure I want to head to the ER, the closest one I heard today that half the staff there just quit and walked out! my surgery hospital is over an hour away
