I also Figure Skate which is a good exercise especially if you jump.  I much prefer spinning but I do jump some.

You actually jump, I am impressed. I can't spin and I don't jump, but if I had too I might get an inch or 2 off the ice. Now start/stop/sharp 360, and a pretty quick 400' rink circle. But jump and spin? Nope, and good for you.

I had a DEXA Scan less than a year ago after I broke my nose during a skate. My nephew-in-law, a GP, told me with my history of broken ribs(6)and nose(9), it would be a good idea after I turned 80.

Mine came back with a 0.1, which falls I to the "normal" category. With all the times I fell on my left hip getting back to skating after 14 years off, think my hip bone would be shattered by now if it wasn't solid enough. Got a multi-color bruise on it right now!

Happy Skating to ya!

@hckynut I can do the single jumps (waltz, loop, toe loop, flip, salchow).  BTW, filip is not a backflip.  It's just a toe-assisted jump from a particular edge.  I am wall-codependent on the flip because several years ago I fell on the simple 3-turn normally used to initiate the jump and broke my arm.  I now use a mowhawk entrance but can't get away from the wall.  Whenever I try to get away from the wall just a little I'll start curving towards it which messes up the jump.  My coach just smiles and shakes his head.  It's all mental.  While I'm not a huge fan of jumping, I don't at all mind jumping into a spin as in a flying camel.

@Icegoddess...how did Co-Q10 help  for periodonatal disease? And what brand did you use? Think I may have and could use some help since I'm terrified of dentists..thx

@89135, this was several years ago before most people had even heard of CoQ10, and the few of them that had only thought of them for heart health, which BTW, studies at least at that time indicated it really didn't seem to have much benefit for.  I had been going to the periodontist, had a couple of procedures there (root scaling and root planing) plus had some gum removed. I had to go there every 3 months and the Periodontist was talking about doing another procuedure.  My husband happened to find an article about a journalist who had good luck with CoQ10 for his dental health and so I decided to try it.  Now, my husband really isn't into supplements and alternative health stuff, so I was surprised he mentioned it to me.

I started taking one pill every day and within 3 months at my next appointment the doctor no longer mentioned another surgical procedure.  Then, the following 3 month appointment he put me on a 6 month plan rotating between him and my regular dentist.  After a couple more visits he actually released me to my regular dentist.  I really thought once one of those guys got ahold of you they never let you go.

I told him about the CoQ10 but he poo poo it saying there were no scientific studies and it was more likely I was just being really diligent about my daily care (which was another time-consuming process).  I didn't have the heart to tell him I had actually backed off on that a little because I didn't like when the bristles for the proxabrush would break off and get stuck between my teeth.

@SilleeMee I started taking the bamboo Extract on your recommendation and after doing some of my own research.  I was a little reticent since every place I looked mentioned a possible problem with thyroid disease, but I could only find one reference to one study involving rats.  I'm not a rat, so I think it's worth a try.  I get my yearly blood results next week, but I can usually tell when my thyroid medicine isn't working and it has been quite stable for a few years now.

I just never really gave it much thought to order 'organic' bamboo powder. Probably because I take so little of it each day. Maybe I'll buy an organic one next time...that's a good idea. Thanks.

@SilleeMee   Ok Cool.  I start off with the organic

Thanks again!

@SilleeMee ....Do you take the bamboo in powder form because you prefer that to swallowing the capsule?  I could mix the powder with my coffee, but taking a pill is easier for me.  It's just a curious question on my part.

I'd like to get off the Boniva that I take...my next dexa scan is in about 6 months...(last one was 2.5 years ago) I'd like to show a generous improvement.

@Mom2Dogs I take it in powder form because I have trouble taking pills but also because I don't remember seeing it in pill form.  It's easy enough to mix in with my morning yogurt along with my flax seeds and some Grape Nuts.  Crunchy yogurt.

If I remember correctly you can only take a lot of the bone-building drugs for a limited amount of time, like 5 years, and then you can't take them again.  So, they're one and done.  But, it's better to do the bone building early rather than waiting and trying to do catch-up.  Kinda like pain management.  I just couldn't bring myself to get the prescription filled and start taking it.  So, I'm glad I found something that works for me.

@89135 , I forgot to mention, at the time I just took whatever CoQ10 (100 mg) I could find at the supermarket, but made sure to take a gel-cap because CoQ10 is fat soluble so it needs to be taken with a fat if not already dissolved in the fat of a gel-cap.  I now take Qunol brand that I get from Costco.

@Icegoddess I am on year 2 of the Boniva....before that I took Fosomax for several years....I am the one that alerted my doctor to the time frame to take the drugs, so she took me off the Foxomax!

Fast forward to 2 years ago, the dexa scans were not improving, they were going the wrong direction, I now have osteoperosis in my hip and another location....so I am now on Boniva.  I am going to try the bamboo powder...and hope I get at least a small amount of improvement.

thanks.

Hi @Icegoddess

You are talking language I have no clue what most of it means. Remember now, I'm a hockey guy. We call your "wall", the "boards", and it goes on from there.

There is a young man, just turned 18, that is the best figure skater I have seen locally. I see him skating before my public skating sessions. Some times he sticks around for the public, so I got to know him pretty well. He talks your language and I tell him the same thing. I don't know a toe jump from whatever other names they go by. I do know he does Quad jumps on a regular basis, and is such a smooth strong skater.

I told him if he is willing to learn the Hockey Rule Book, I will learn all the figure skating lingo!  He says " no way". LOL!

I am heading to the rink in about 45 minutes for the 2 1/2 hour skating sessions they have on Sundays. Try to skate as much of it as I can.

Enjoy your skating and stay perpendicular to the ice, ok!
