Anyone else on dessicated/natural thyroid medication.....mine is Nature Throid....it's not available/backordered everywhere! I used to be on Armour long ago and then this same thing happened and I bounced around on several different brands then Armour came back on the market but they had changed the formula and it never worked for me as well...hence I got on Nature Throid.
I feel so upset right now as now I will have to go back to Armour and hope it works out....all the pharmacies in my area don't even have other options! Told me NP Thyroid is back ordered as well and they have zero idea when that will be back. Never was on this one but I'd try it before Armour.
For those on synthyroid or others like that this wouldn't apply to you at all....so please don't misunderstand me....this is only for dessicated thyroid meds.
I just don't understand WHY these manufacturers are doing this....I can't go w/o my medication...and it panics me big time when this happens. I don't look forward to changing medication brand and hoping it might work for me and then in 6wks I am feeling super bad!
Ok I am done ranting here....I just wish they would stop doing this....every few yrs....it mess with us with hashi's really badly.

I don't take the dessicated, but for some reason I need the synthetic that's made by a particular pharmaceutical house. Body just doesn't react well to other brands.
And since nobody stocks this brand I need, it's always a special order.
My sympathies to you, @tsavorite because I understand the nightmarish roller coaster ride of stopping the one you need and substituting another, finding the best dosage on that, and then getting 'your' med back and re-adjusting to that again. 😵 💛

@x Hedgethanks for listening! This is a new doctor for me and all was going so well as she understands how to treat thyroid disease properly. Now this mess at the pharmacy...and worse you can't match them dosage wise. I had to ask them if they could even get the largest dose ordered special and they said yes but now I need new doctor to change it all up. Left a message on their refill line trying to explain this hot mess.
I sure hope it made sense and it all works out. But then comes the hoping going back on Armour doesn't make me sick again.
I googled about the back order on Nature Throid and all I found was that it's been going on for a yr! and they have a apology posting out about it all! So who knows when they will have their product back and back orders filled in local pharmacies.
Plus why is this spilling over to NP Thyroid/Acella...can't get that one either. Armour is all that's around. I wish I could take synthyroid...tried that and doctor had to add in T3 for me...got up to 15mg's of T3 and my levels looked good but my hair wouldn't stop shedding like crazy on it. But without it my T3 levels were non existent...and I was so ill. For some reason my body won't convert T4 to the active T3....so back to dessicated thyroid meds for me.
I haven't heard back from anyone so I am hoping this all will work out.

Check all your pharmacies in town to see about getting the NP Thyroid. It is not on Backorder.
I started taking Erfa back when Armour had reformulations. Erfa started up with their reformulations so I found & switched to NP Thyroid.
NP Thyroid IMO is like the old Armour before reformulations but probably better IMO.
I'm gald I have a year supply.
From Stop The Thyroid Madness site
NP Thyroid made by the company called Acella, you can do it sublingually, which patients like. Active ingredients are listed as 38 mcg levothyroxine (T4) and 9 mcg liothyronine (T3) per one grain (60 mg), though like all desiccated thyroid, has all five hormones. Sometimes pharmacies will call it generic, but Acella says no, it’s a name brand. So if you are substituted with NP Thyroid, it’s a GOOD thing. NP Thyroid has no wheat products in their tablets.
Armour Thyroid
One grain is 60 mg and contains .038 mg (or 38 mcg) of T4 and 9 mcg of T3, plus unmeasured amounts of T2, T1 and calcitonin. The latter three are not removed, as rumor occasionally states. Each tablet contains:
This is the info posted on NP Thyroid website.
Availability NP Thyroid® is Available & Not on Backorder
Due to the very high demand for NP Thyroid® tablets, you may be hearing misleading information about availability of our product. Please be assured that there is NOT a backorder or recall related to Acella Pharmaceutical’s NP Thyroid® tablets in any strength.
As a result of increased demand due to other desiccated thyroid tablets being recalled (removed fda link you can see at NP Thyroid) or on manufacturer backorder, we have moved to a system of optimized allocation to our wholesale customers to ensure consistent availability across the country.
Because of this, there is a chance that certain pharmacies may temporarily be out of a specific strength until they can replenish from their wholesaler. If your pharmacy is temporarily out of stock, you may want to search other pharmacies in your community for availability.
Again, NP Thyroid® is NOT on “backorder.”
“Backorder” means that a company is out of stock of a particular item and cannot fill any orders. Acella Pharmaceuticals is not in that position. We continue to manufacture NP Thyroid® on a regular basis. Nor are our products impacted by any recall. Our products contain active pharmaceutical ingredients sourced from the United States. Our allocation procedure is designed to ensure a stable, reliable and consistent supply of desiccated thyroid tablets for current and future demand.
Availability at CVS Pharmacy
We have heard from prescribers and patients about the decision that CVS pharmacy has recently made to no longer stock NP Thyroid® at their pharmacies. While we have no say in how corporate pharmacies make decisions that impact patient care and the availability of prescription products, we want to assure our customers and prescribers that NP Thyroid® is NOT on backorder and is available at any pharmacy throughout the USA through their wholesalers, including CVS.
NP Thyroid® tablets are one of the most consistent, available and cost effective Natural Desiccated Porcine Thyroid tablets (T4 & T3) available by prescription. We respect the choices that licensed healthcare prescribers and patients make when choosing appropriate therapy. As a licensed healthcare prescriber or a customer, you have the ability to request that CVS continue to fill your prescription of NP Thyroid® as prescribed and not allow any substitutions OR you can choose to have your prescriptions transferred to another pharmacy in your area that is committed to prescriber, patient and customer satisfaction. We would recommend you check around to local pharmacies in your area and compare prices GoodRX to find the best option for you then notify your CVS pharmacy of your request to transfer your NP Thyroid® prescription.

From Stop the Thryoid Madness site regarding the Nature Throid.
NATURETHROID by RLC Labs (formerly Western Research Labs) See Westhroid-P below. UPDATE: RLC stopped production of their NDTs in 2017, stating it was due to updating their machinery. When it started to come back in 2018, an awful lot of patients stated that the “new” Naturethroid caused their symptoms to come back with a vengeance, and labs proved it. That is still going on in 2019, sadly.

I take Armour and have never tried your brand, because my Dr didn't recommend it. But ,Armour works well for me, and I can't take any synthetic stuff
Good luck

@tsavorite Natural is more inconsistent because you are not making it in a lab. You need the animal to keep stock on products like this.
Have you tried an online pharmacy? They usually have outlets across the country and can pull from another area for you.

I have taken dessicated thyroid for years. They always say it's not consistant but IMO it is. When I have my labs done they are always in range unless I'm not taking what I'm supposed to take which I do sometimes.

@Nightowlz I meant the inconsistency of production. It's easy when you can order the chemicals. Not so easy when you are deriving it from livestock and then need to go through FDA testing for purity and efficacy standards. Just a guess as to what the backorder may be.
It's great to hear that you are doing well on it.

I just got a refill for 180 tablets at Wal-Mart. That's all I had on file to fill. Now I have over a year supply. Hopefully Acella won't run into problems with people switching over. I'm also tired of playing their games trying to get my medication. That's why I keep so much on hand. I have never had any problem with my pills getting old & not working. You never know when this will happen. I have been through this too many times.
