According to a American Heart Association study. The article is quite long, so link is provided below for the full article, but this is an excerpt re: coconut oil.:
"People are also quick to believe trends that aren’t supported by science, he said. A prime example is coconut oil, widely touted for its health benefits. “I just don’t know” who is pushing it, but it’s not scientists, Sacks said. It may be driven by manufacturers looking to profit, or some countries’ economic dependence on coconut oil, he said.
According to the advisory, coconut oil is 82 percent saturated fat, and studies show it raises LDL “bad” cholesterol as much as butter, beef fat or palm oil. Canola oil, on the other hand, has only 7 percent saturated fat. All fats and oils have varying levels of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat."

I never could understand why people would think it's good for you. If only people knew the facts...
Thanks @KingstonsMom

Love that sentence:
People are also quick to believe trends that aren't supported by science.
And ... it's not only coconut oil! ![]()

I remember a number of years ago it was bad for you and wondered about the surge of all it's glories now. The sludge factor should be a clue. Like shortening. Ugh.

I remember years ago when it was bad for you , so I never jumped on this particular bandwagon.

I always wondered how it could be considered healthy for you with that much saturated fat. Thanks for the info.

"The Fat You Eat...Is The Fat You Wear"
My plant-based doctors have been saying this since they
began practicing in the 70's. ALL oils are not good for us.
Oils have a good marketing team. Lots & lots of money to be
made with the production & manufacturing of these different
oils. Totally ridiculous how the Public has grabbed onto this fad.
Is it surprising we are sicker than ever w/ modern day illnesses
like heart disease, diabetes, obesity at the same time these
fat fads are at their peak? Nope.

Back in the 80's and into the early 2000's, coconut oil was right up there with the Hydrogenated Oil on the "bad for you list". Then comes the "it's great for you" studies. Myself, I am not concerned because even though I have had 2 heart attacks.
I am moderate in pretty much all the foods I eat and what I use to cook, what little I don't eat "as is". I make my popcorn with coconut oil because over decades I have found it to be what I like best.
Not much more I can do to protect my twice damaged heart muscle than I am doing right now, and something like this isn't going to change what I view as my healthy and physical fitness lifestyle. Having a little oil that I enjoy at this stage of my life? I will take my chances.
Thank you for posting this for everyone. It is up to each individual to decide what, if anything, it means to them, in relationship to wanting be healthy/physically, and mentally fit.

I hear ya' John.
I still use real butter because my Dr. said it was better (in moderation, of course) than the 'spreads' which are chemical laden.
I'm like you, there's only so much I'm willing to give up, but at the same time, it's all about moderation.

I give my dogs a heaping tablespoon ,twice a week, and use it on my cast iron skillet.
