Tennessee has so much more to offer than just Nashville and the "country music stuff." I've been to Nashville twice and loved it but DH and I are very into country music. Personally, if we wouldn't have done the downtown scene, I'm not sure there would have been 4 days worth of things to do right in Nashville.
But research Tennessee. You can do the Great Smoky Mountains.
I'm sure Tennessee has a Dept. of Tourism website. Or go to a travel website like Trip Advisor and look up things to do.

I don't know about things to do, but my son thought it was the most beautiful place he'd ever seen.
I think he did take a canoe down into the Tennessee swamps which you can do in parts. (I don't think I"d want to do that though-what about snakes?!)
There are so many great suggestions here.

I went to Nashville but I am a country music lover.
The highlights for me were the Jack Daniels tour and the Loretta Lynn Ranch.
I didn't go to Memphis because I felt that was a separate trip.
I need to get there.

We're taking a bus trip to Nashville and Memphis this coming November. Leaving from NJ we will be making stops every 2-3 hours on the bus for rest stops. The tours include Pigeon Forge/Gaitlingburg, Nashville and Memphis. Looking to hear all the recommendations from this group although most meals and accomadations are taken care of. We will be going to the Grand Old Opry and a couple of other musical venues. I'm not a big country fan but music is music and I love music!!

My oldest daughter, her boyfriend, and another friend hiked thru the Smoky Mountains during their college breaks. They would spend anywhere from 5-10 days hiking on different trails around the Cade’s Cove area. My daughter has some beautiful pictures, along with great memories of those hiking experiences. While their college friends headed for beaches and bars, the 3 of them headed to the mountains to enjoy nature.

Your daughter would probably enjoy the Gatlinburg area or Chattanooga. If you like history there are some wonderful historic sites around Nashville and Franklin.

My husband and I had a log home in a small town in the very eastern part of TN. The tri cities area has so much to offer, from parks, hiking, Appalachian trail, skiing or just enjoying those beautiful sunsets and breathing the fresh air in your rocker on the front porch. We had our home for 26 years and was our family refuge as we lived always in big cities. Yes TN is more than Nashville and Memphis.

I live 50 miles south of Nashville---tons of stuff to do, places to eat, shop and entertainment. My best advice----be prepared weather wise! We are hot, humid and sticky during summer. When Fall arrives---we can be one day at 80 degrees and 40 degress on the same day! LOL The saying is----if you don't like TN weather, just hang around a few hours---it will change! Like others posted---Jack Daniels in Lynchburg is a nice lazy afternoon, Franklin has lots of antique shops, and of course Pigeon Forge for great Mountain area plus Dollywood, outlet shopping etc., Memphis for the Blues music and Elvis home, Chattanooga for mountain sights, Rock City and Lookout Mountain. Please, ask quesitons----come on to us----have fun and be safe!

@loisp wrote:My husband and I retired and wanted to move out of NJ. We tried southern Delaware for a year and didn't like it at all. Our next move was to Knoxville. We have been here about 6 months and couldn't be happier. We are taking advantage of museums, culture, including theatre and opera, street fairs and markets. There seems to be something going on almost every week. You can choose to be as city oriented or as country oriented as you please. Also it is just a 2 - 3 hours from other major Tennessee cities and states. So happy we made this move.
@loisp My husband and I are considering Knoxville. We live in the northern burbs of Chicago and want to get away from this crooked state, the taxes and winters. I like cool temps and my husband likes warmer weather, so we think this will be a good compromise. We've heard so many wonderful things, but really need to plan several visits. How did you find your home? Did you use an agent, go online or do you have friends in the area? I'm just starting and am not sure where to even begin looking. Thanks so much. I'm glad you're enjoying your relocation.
