Many years ago took a side trip to Tangier, while visiting Spain. Went to the Kasbah and it was quite the experience.
Went by boat between Spain and over. Passed Gibraltar. Such a diversity from anything I knew. It's was cultural, intriguing, and as much as I enjoyed seeing I was glad to leave. I will never forget the children used as pick pockets and panhandling. I was struck by the poverty much different than we have in the US.
I say anytime you have the opportunity to travel and experience the world do it. Everything comes with a risk, but hectic going into downtown Chicago is a daymare!

The locals probably feel like they did in Lahaina - if you're thinking of staying away because of the earthquake, don't.  They need your tourist revenue more than ever.

This is an amazing thread.  I've enjoyed reading it.  I've always wanted to visit Morocco. Thanks for sharing, all!

I was in Lisbon, on way to a week in Morocco, when earthquake hit.  Part of a tour group.  After 2 days they decided too risky to go to Morocco due to aftershocks, etc.  So they offered us a week in Spain, or choice of returning to U.S.  some people returned,, most of us stayed & had a great time.  Still bummed about missing the sunset camel ride outside Marrakesh, but all in all a great trip.
