Many years ago took a side trip to Tangier, while visiting Spain. Went to the Kasbah and it was quite the experience.
Went by boat between Spain and over. Passed Gibraltar. Such a diversity from anything I knew. It's was cultural, intriguing, and as much as I enjoyed seeing I was glad to leave. I will never forget the children used as pick pockets and panhandling. I was struck by the poverty much different than we have in the US.
I say anytime you have the opportunity to travel and experience the world do it. Everything comes with a risk, but hectic going into downtown Chicago is a daymare!

The locals probably feel like they did in Lahaina - if you're thinking of staying away because of the earthquake, don't.  They need your tourist revenue more than ever.

I was in Lisbon, on way to a week in Morocco, when earthquake hit.  Part of a tour group.  After 2 days they decided too risky to go to Morocco due to aftershocks, etc.  So they offered us a week in Spain, or choice of returning to U.S.  some people returned,, most of us stayed & had a great time.  Still bummed about missing the sunset camel ride outside Marrakesh, but all in all a great trip.
