We have a silicone thingy that pops popcorn in the microwave with NO OIL.  When you're finished, it goes into the dishwasher to clean and takes up next to no space in the cabinet.  When I saw it on Amazon, it sounded too good to be true but for just under $20 I decided to take a chance.  Wow, delicious healthy popcorn with  all of the kernels popped.  The top of this thing folds like origami, and you have to be very careful when you fold it down.  I read the instructions given by reviewers on Amazon, and it worked perfectly from our first try.  It's called Chef'n Pop Top Microwave Popcorn Popper.

ETA I don't use the popcorn setting on the microwave.

Hi Shoesnbags,

Please go back and read my updated information under my original post because....

"microwaving popcorn is dangerous to your health"

That is why I use the Whirley Pop Pop corn popper with the hand crank, and that is used on the stove.

@adoreqvc

I appreciate your concern, but having read the article you linked, none of this applies to the popcorn popper I recommended.  The article says "there is a chemical used in the nonstick coating on the inside of the popcorn bags" that has been associated with cancers. It also says "A chemical called diacetyl, used in the flavoring agent added to microwave popcorn, increases rates of an otherwise relatively rare lung condition."  Both of these dangers refer to microwave popcorn that you buy in a bag. It's not the microwave that is the problem, it's the stuff added to the popcorn & the bag.  As a cancer survivor, I never use "microwave popcorn" for that very reason.  That's why I've been so happy to find a silicone container that pops the same kind of popcorn you are using in your stovetop popper, but in the microwave with no oil needed.  This is the same principle as popping in a paper bag.

@INDIANA BONES

I just pop corn in a pan on the stove but my current favorite thing to add is cumin.  I add it to the melted butter before I pour it on the popcorn.  If you do not like cumin - curry is also good as is oregano.

Paper Bag Popcorn Method:

  • Step One: Measure 1/4 cup popcorn kernels into a lunchbox-sized paper bag.
  • Step Two: Loosely fold just the very top of the bag over so the kernels don’t spill out.
  • Step Three: Microwave until there are more than 3 seconds between popping sounds. (In my 1000-watt microwave, this took 2 minutes and 10 seconds.)
  • Step Four: Carefully remove bag and enjoy!

Note: If you want flavored popcorn, toss the kernels in 1 tsp oil, scant 1/8 tsp salt, and desired seasonings—such as cinnamon or garlic powder—before popping.

This is such an inexpensive way to make popcorn.   I buy the kernals in bulk and enjoy that way.   I don't eat a lot of salt, so I lightly salt afterwards.   I tried the oil beforehand, but it left the bag soggy.  Sometimes you have to careful because the bag can break and you'll have kernals all over your microwave.

I would worry that the oil and paper bag combination could get overheated in a microwave and catch on fire.  (Know a guy who did thousands of dollars in damage to his parents' kitchen by overheating frozen french fries in the microwave).

The best time for me to add butter or seasoning to the popcorn would be after it's cooked and is still warm.  Love the paper bag method of popping.
