Re: OK, call me crazy, but why...

I never knew people got sick from eating mashed potatoes and stuffing @ECBG. Sorry that this happens to you. It's a good thing you know what not to eat.

What is it you don't understand?

Somehow Thanksgiving dinner evolved into serving mashed potatoes and stuffing, something the pilgrims didn't have in those days. They didn't have potatoes, then, added later when they became available.  They certainly are good with turkey and gravy.

Both became an American tradition on the day, including sweet potatoes.  It wouldn't be a Thanksgiving dinner without all three in my house.

@Foxxee

I was told at Jamestown that sweet potatoes and ham for the new Americans were a holiday festivity.  The sweet of the potatoes offset the salty ham which they put in the ground in salt to preserve.

I have stuffing (dressing depending on where you live) and rice because it's a grain and a different texture.

Since I taught nutrition, I would never serve dressing and potatoes, and corn, or any combination of the two.

@ECBG

If you taught nutrition, you know that stuffing and dressing are not the same.

My spouse would eat my mashed potatoes and my dressing for every meal, slathered in gravy. And if I didn't make some for Thanksgiving he would feel personally attacked. LOL

If we have Thanksgiving at our house, I always make the same things every year and it makes everyone happy. We rarely have many leftovers, maybe enough for one more meal, then it's all gone.

We are a very active family and a couple of days of rich food isn't going to hurt any of us.

@kate2357

I don't eat gravy but 2 sons and DH do.  Daughter, 1 son and I don't.  It's okay.  I serve what folks like and some of what I like as well.  I don't care whether any nutritionist likes it or not . It is Thanksgiving and I owe no thanks to anyone but God, my country and my family.

Not unless they are diabetic and that's all they eat.  Glucose is the primary energy source of the body. Major dietary sources of glucose include starches and sugars. Digestion of Carbohydrates. Dietary carbohydrates are digested to glucose, fructose and/or galactose, and absorbed into the blood in the small intestine.  For a diabetic, they are already full of glucose and cannot afford much more of the same.  However, even CDC says a diabetic should receive 45% of their caloric intake in carbohydrates.  So if you are taking in 2000 calories per day, you can have around 800-900 calories in carbs and the 1100-1200 in proteins and fats.

LOL! @proudlyfromNJ, your comment reminded me of my youngest son. Once, while I was making dinner, I asked 'Are you going to want rice?', & he replied "I almost never want rice." Smiley LOL

In this house I focus on only cooking the foods my family asks for, and will actually eat for Thanksgiving; turkey breast, dressing, mashed potatoes, lots of gravy, cranberry sauce and rolls.  Sometimes deviled eggs and jello salad; occasionally pie.  I do not bother with vegetables as they are never eaten.

We only want what we really like, and for this meal it's the basic foods, which always includes mashed potatoes.

As I have gotten to the point I don't like standing on my feet any longer, I buy cakes from my housekeeper who used to own a bakery before going into the housekeeping business.  She makes the best cakes  Wow.  They are as good or better than mine.  Taste like my momma's. This year instead of doing the red velvet, carrot cake, etc, we are having a caramel torte and a peanut butter poundcake.  Oh, those are sooooo good.  I make fluff.  My DILs like fluff. I make the one with fruit cocktail, pecans, coconut, mandarin oranges and lots of Cool-Whip.  I make the gravy from giblets if I have a turkey but this year we are not having a turkey so I will make dressing from a hen.  They have such rich stock for dressing and giblets and hens have pretty good giblets.  Their meat is much more tender than turkey and since I have a hiatal hernia, I will eat the chicken and they will eat what is likely to be a prime rib roast.  One grandson likes chicken better as well.
