Re: My Neighbor Gave Me Figs

My neighbor has a fig tree and gave me a bunch this summer.  I didn't eat one.

I learned a long time ago that figs contain wasps or at one time contained a wasp and it died inside.  That turned me off of figs.

Was never tempted to eat a fig newton either.  They just looked horrible!

I do make h'ors d'oeuvres using fig jelly. But I don't eat it!

@Lucky Charm  I can understand you revulsion, but by the time the fig has reached maturity, there isn's anything left of the wasp. At least, that's my understanding.

It reminds me of when DH was studying for his USDA exam and told me there was an allowable amount of bug carcases and leavings in spices like paprika. I said "WHAT??" He said "it's inevitable."

Our trees did very well this year - sometimes it's hit or miss with them in Ohio.  They're very good roasted with a little honey.  Last weekend I made fig jam and oatmeal bars for the first time.

That's why my husband won't eat them, but I do.

I am 100% sure every one of us has eaten insects many, many times without knowing it.  There are insects in peanut butter, pasta, berries, frozen and fresh veggies and fruit, fruit juice, canned products including tomatoes, spices, especially black pepper plus a lot more.

It is acceptable to sell food with insects and their parts. It's unavoidable.  Figs are delicious, BTW.  Yummy.

Adding:  Most foods enhanced with red coloring get that beautiful red from ground up beetles.
