I love figs, but I don't have a fig tree. My neighbor walked over last night with about 12 figs. DH doesn't really like to eat raw figs (Why???), so I decided to cook them into a dish.

  • I caramelized 4 medium thinly sliced onions and added the sliced figs at the end.
  • Then I removed those from the pan and seared about 2 pounds of chicken tenderloins and removed them.
  • Then I added about a cup and a half of chicken broth to scrape up the fond and reduced by half.
  • Then I added everything back to the pan and brought to temp.
  • I put it all in a L&L glass 9 x 9, topped with shredded smoked Gouda and broiled for about 5 min.

It tasted like a restaurant meal! So good!

@PA Mom-mom I have never had figs. And I don't know why. My Mom frequently bought "non common" foods. And "we kids" had to at least try them once.

Now I am curious to try figs.

You reminded me of us. We went away on vacation and came back earlier this week. There were 8 eggplants waiting for us to pick them. My husband went knocking on the neighbor's doors. And no one wanted any eggplant.

So I am trying all different recipes.

Re: My Neighbor Gave Me Figs

@PA Mom-mom   My cousin, who lives about a quarter of a mile away from me, just called me a few hours ago and said she picked a LOT of figs from her tree and has a bag waiting for me.  I copied your recipe and will make it.  My son loves eating figs just as they are, but I think I'll like them cooked as you did.
Around Christmas time, I always make the Italian fig cookies but they use the dried figs or Mission figs for the filling.

Re: My Neighbor Gave Me Figs

@ciao_bella  I would rather eat them fresh as well, but, oh well, DH weighed in. I think adding some balsamic would be good too, but DH didn't want the added sugar. Fig season is glorious. When we move to Maryland in a few years, I'm going to try to grow figs.

I love figs and wish I had a tree.  I buy them often and eat them fresh.

My husband is squeamish and won't touch them. That only leaves more for me.

Re: My Neighbor Gave Me Figs

@PA Mom-mom.  You're quite the creative cook. It sounds wonderful.  YOU need to plant a fig tree.  They're easy to grow and pick, no trouble at all.
