Most companies will tell you to stay home if you are sick.  I am sure he can afford to stay home.  I hope it's not the flu, where I live they advise you to wear a hospital mask if you are diagnosed with it and you are out and about.  Not sure why people work when they are sick if they don't have to.  I hope he feels better, although working will not help him any.
