Those we have held in our arms for a little while, we will hold in our hearts forever.  Prayers for you and Mickey.

@moon_gazer, so very sorry for your loss of Mickey.   It is the most difficult part of having a pet.

@Sammycat1  Your poem brought tears to my eyes.  These posts are always difficult for me, but I know the grief of the op so I always support and share in their loss.  My heart always aches for those of us who share this journey as well as the op.

I am so sorry for your loss. It leaves a whole in your heart. He is such a handsome dog! Take time to be kind to your self and it is ok to grieve. I pray that you will be flooded with good and funny memories to sustain you until you meet Mickey again. He has that impish look like mine. I bet he was a lot of fun. You really gave him the ultimate gift! Hugs to you.

Your darling Mickey was so lucky to have a parent who loved him so much that he got his final gift - release from pain so he could cross the rainbow bridge.  It hurts so hard it’s hard fo believe you can survive, but know that those of us who have walked in your shoes offer you healing for your heart.

Thanks to each of you for your kind and comforting words. It does truly help to know that others have walked this path and do understand the deep pain that comes when we lose our pets. Little Mickey came into my life as a puppy shortly after I had lost my son to cancer. The little guy was my savior - the love he gave me got me through some really rough days.

Thank you again to each of you.

@moon_gazer,

Your MIckey had the eyes of an old soul--I can see how he had (and has) a hold on your heart.  That's where he's lived all along, and that's where he'll always reside.

Here's a poem by Jim Willis that I always have loved about the bond between dog and dog parent. I hope it brings you some comfort:

So this is where we part, My Friend,
and you'll run on, around the bend,
gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.

I will go on, I'll find the strength,
life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
share one last look, before I grieve.

There are others, that much is true,
but they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
will remember well all you've taught.

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
the fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
take with you this...I loved you best. Heart

What a beautiful poem. Thank you.
