So touching.  All of you are so kind.  I wish I could convey all this to my Buddy.   I wish he could know and feel the spirit of love you all send.  That's the hardest part for me -- that I can't talk to him and make him understand -- I can't make him know that my heart is breaking.  As he lay next to my leg and I pet him, he looks up at me with those eyes and I cry so hard.  Woman Sad

Karner, Buddy is a gift from God, an angel that understands exactly what is in your heart.  He understands more than you think.  He knows you love him with all of your heart and soul.

Karnerblue, he feels it, he understands.  When you spend time with him, let him hear joy in your voice and happiness in your touch. They're so sensitive, our pets;  make this time he has remaining with you filled with demonstrations of the happiness in your heart that you feel for him.  By doing that, you show the ultimate love and give him the greatest of gifts. Our dogs love to please us -- show him he does just by being there with you.  Heart

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

I love Lhasas because they do communicate so beautifully.    My Holly would answer me back with her voice and her tail swish.    If she disagreed with me, she yelled at me.    I loved it.  We talked to each other constantly.     I adopted her at age 9 after her first mom died (at age 86).    Holly would talk to her frequently, looking up to the ceiling and staring, listening.     When she passed, I told her to run to her.    We both have the same first name.     I was hoping that Holly would come to me after she passed, as she enjoyed from her mom, but, no.     It has hurt so bad and made me feel guilt.

Lhasas are spiritual dogs that prayed with Tibetan monks.    Buddy listens to you, feels you, and talks to you.   I know many Lhasa Mommies.    They all communicate, it's a breed thing.    Get 2 of them together and they never shut up!

@Karnerblue, you dog understands. He's not able to tell you with words that he understands, but he does. Animals can tell when you're hurting (both physically and emotionally), they can tell when you're happy and scared, too. He knows that your heart is breaking....which is probably why he wants to be near you, so he can comfort you. You and your dog can comfort each other.

OMG!  That brought tears to my eyes.  My dog is sick too.  I've been crying non-stop for days.  I've been so upset, yesterday, I started smoking.  I haven't smoked cigarettes in 30 years!  I almost euthanized my dog yesterday.  Then I realized, I just wanted to have her killed to stop MY pain.  This is so horrible.

I'm so sorry that you're having to go through such pain as well.  It's hurts so much to see your best companion hurting themselves and not being able to do much of anything for them.  Unfortunately, this part of the pet-people relationship is a responsibility that we take on when we invite these delightful creatures into our lives.  I wish they would live as long as us, although I doubt that would make parting any easier.

Years ago when one of our dogs was starting to fail, I told my vet that I wished she would just go to sleep one night and not wake up in order to spare me the awful decision of "when".  He said that everyone wishes for that, but unfortunately it rarely happens that way.  Between you, your vet and your dog, you will know what to do, and when.  As much as it hurts to say good-bye, in the end we have to remember to do what is best for the dog. She'll tell you in her own way when she can't go on anymore and it's time.

It's a tough time for you, we've all been in similar situations and we know what you''re going through.  And it never gets any easier no matter how many times you have to deal with it.  My thoughts and prayers are with you, Rina.

That reminds me of a time a couple of years ago.  I was alone at home because my husband was away and my daughter was away at school.  I was very, very sick for about a week.  For two days I could barely get up off the couch.  Buddy stayed right by me, curled up behind my legs while I slept.  One day I was so sick I called my Mom, and we are not close but no matter how old you get sometimes you just want your mother.  Anyway, I called her crying and she showed little concern.  When I hung up I broke down and Buddy came over and sniffed my face real close and started licking my tears.  Seriously, he's never licked me in the face but that one time.  He's my best Bud, my friend when others were not.

Karnerblue,

The memory you shared about Buddy licking your tears away melted my heart. The two of you are richer for having shared so many years together. There is no love like that between a beloved pet and their pet parent. Thank you for sharing.
