Have a Lhasa Apso that is 16 years old.  He's been acting very strangly this past week or so.  No matter what I'm doing he follows me panting very heavily and making strange low growlin noises.  The only time he's quiet is when i'm sitting on the couch and he will get as close as he can to me but the minute I get up, he jumps down and follows me wherever I go.  If I sit in the chair, he will circle the chair and constantly pant and whine and then he just goes behind the couch and all around the living room.  He then will lay down at my feet for three/four seconds, and then up and circling the room.  It's driving me crazy.  I can't get a minute to myself.  I feel like I'm going to lose it.  It's almost maddening.  I just don't know what to do.

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

Your dog's behavior (the panting, the restlessness, the growling) suggests a potentially serious medical problem, from heart disease to a neurological issue -- you should get him to the vet ASAP.  He's trying to tell you he's hurting badly.

Get your dog to a Veternarian ASAP,   your dog sounds like he is not feeling well.

Do u have a 24 hour animal hospital in town?  You could call and ask but I agree with sammycat, he's hurting and needs assistance asap!

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

Just talked to my DH, who IS a veterinarian. He said to get him in ASAP to get him checked. Good luck - we'll be thinking of you!

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

He was just at the vet a couple months ago because he was having mobiilty issues.  I was worried he was in pain.  They said he was not and they put him on some medicine for arthritis.  He's fine if he's laying next to me.  He does not pant and seems fine.  Guess I will have to call the vet tomorrow.  I thought maybe someone might have had this experience.

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

I have an old dog, we don't know how old since she was a rescue, that does the excess panting thing. She seems excessively hot even when it's very cold. I keep a small fan on the floor aimed right at her favorite sleeping place. I had $800., worth of testing done on her and the vet could find nothing wrong.

She doesn't do the following thing...I've got four dogs and three of them are always in the house right on my heels. Some old dogs have neurological problems and become senile. They're more likely though to get lost in a corner and are not able to find their way out.

It would be best if you could discuss these things with your vet. Your dog is very old even for a small breed. Mine is an Australian Shepherd. I've had her 11 years and she was supposed to be 5 or 6 when I got her. That was obviously wrong.

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

Your poor dog is in some kind of pain/discomfort and that is why he cannot sit still.  Doggie is trying to find a way to get comfortable and have the pain stop.  He is always by you as he is trying to tell you that something is wrong.

I agree with the other posters.   You need to call your vet office if it is large enough to have a vet on call.  If not, then an emergency vet clinic.

I'm sitting here feeling so bad for your little dog.  He is looking to you to help him.

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

I came home from work one day and found him in the upstairs bathroom in the linen closet.  He had gone in there and somehow closed the door and could not get out.  I felt so bad .. I don't know how long he was in there.  I just cried.

Re: Help With an Elderly Dog

I've had dogs with heart problems that did this.  When we got them on the proper medicine it stopped.  Your dog is definitely uncomfortable and needs to see the Vet.  Let us know what he says.
