When Was The Last Time You Used This?

Vintage Potato Masher Real Distressed Painted Wood Handle image 1

I had never!  My electric hand held mixer died just as the potatoes were coming off of the range to be mashed!

DH grabbed the antique masher off the wall, washed it, and we were in business!

Re: When Was The Last Time You Used This?

I still have my grandmother's potato masher. My parents used it at all our family Thanksgivings and other big dinners. I was called to mash a big bowl of potatoes or turnips to help out.

My mom switched to a hand held mixer at some point but I remember the masher so well! Hot boiled potatoes, mash, mash, some warm milk and big slabs of butter, mash again and again until the best mashed potatoes ever. Our Thanksgivings could be as many as 20 people so the task was hot and tough!

Good memories, thanks!

I always use an old fashioned masher for small amounts.  In a pinch you can use a clean wine bottle (flat bottomed) to smash the potatoes, fluff and stir with a large fork.

I use mine all the time, and it's fairly new!

Love it, as a matter of fact.

Never used a mixer for mashed potatoes anyway.

@ECBG - I use it all of the time! My mom never made mashed potatoes with a mixer and I don't either. I have never made them with a mixer.

I use my "masher" for other foods too. I'm just not a fan of "smooth" potatoes or or other things, like sweet potatoes, squash, etc.   Smiley Happy

I used this exact masher also for years, and when it broke I bought the one pictured at the beginning of this thread.

I have an old fashioned masher.

I've never used a mixer! I like finding the occasional lump/bump, makes it really seem like homemade.

Re: When Was The Last Time You Used This?

I use mine often; I prefer my mashed potatoes have some lumps, to give the gravy something to hang on to.

My MIL used a mixer, and more milk than I consume in a month, to whip her mashed potatoes into a smooth paste, like baby food.  I hated her mashed potatoes!
