Believe it or not i burned rice in the microwave.  It smells awful and i don't know how to get rid of the smell.  Tried boiling vanilla in it, but that did nothing.  Any ideas?

try white vinegar or lemon - heat in a bowl for a few minutes then wipe

Is your microwave oven the kind with a charcoal filter (over-the-range models)? Might want to replace that. Also wipe down everything inside the oven with vinegar water.

@coffee drinker  I agree with the vinegar and water. To add a bit of fun, use Angry Mommy. It holds the vinegar and water and makes it fun.

We keep a small glass of white vinegar always in our MW.

@PA Mom-mom What the heck is Angry Mommy.  I've never heard of it.  I'll try the vinegar in a mug.

Take out the plate and metal thing wash in hot water and dish liquid and do the same on the inside. Then spray with vinegar and dry-and voila! sparkling clean.

If that doesn't get rid of the smell do you have any cloves or spices you could put in a dish with water and just microwave for about 30 seconds?

I had burned popcorn and besides washing everything with white vinegar, I left a bowl of baking soda in it for a day at a time until the smell was gone.  Took about 3 days and I changed it out each day but it worked.

@coffee drinker It's just a fun way to diffuse the steam coming out from the vinegar and water. I got them for my DIL and DD. They love to use them. Available on Azn.

Zap a half of lemon in two cups of water for a few minutes.  Let it sit in oven for about 10 mins.  Take out and wipe down the inside of the oven.
