Re: Random survey - gravy boats

Since we are usually informal, in past years I just put the gravy in a large cream pitcher (for lack of a better description) set in a bowl to catch drips.  Maybe I will have my husband hold the two gravy boats behind his back and do a random pick (to go with my random survey).  Interesting responses from people and I have a few ideas for future entertaining.  I seem to be party central for my family and most years there are just 8 of us (but we have had as many as 30 back in the day).  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

It's not bone china but love the insulated thermos type that keeps the gravy hot.

I pour hot hot water in the pitcher early on - so when the gravy is hot - dump the water and pour gravy in my  simple plastic type thermos.  Kind of looks like a tea pot - spout and all.  I have 2 - each end of table.

Guest appreciate................. hot gravy - and it stays hot.

Re: Random survey - gravy boats

I have the gravy boat with attached base that goes with the set of china for 12 that my mom bought in the early 50's.  It's called Fuji Garland & i don't recall her ever using the gravy boat.  I lugged the whole set when I moved states 16 years ago & I've never used it at all since she passed in 1997 & it hadn't been used for some years before that. It's really pretty, but I should donate it.

@aubnwa01 - Oh that is pretty!  I don't recall seeing one that style.  The two I ended up with are silver or silverplate (more likely).  All the gravy boats I have seen have a handle and one spout.  The one in your picture would definitely need a ladle!  I love pretty china and all the things that go along with setting a nice table.  But hardly ever do it.

I also vote for the attached base on the gravy boat.

The very first meal that I had after we got our formal dining room set, I had a rude awaking. Two chairs were stained (never got the stains out and I tried and tried) with gravy. So anything that helps keep gravy off the upholstery gets my vote.

I don't use a gravy boat!  If I have gravy there's company and I need a bigger container!  I use a bowl.

Re: Random survey - gravy boats

@Sooner   My formal dining room table holds twelve people, but with a place setting at each  space, plus water glasses, salt and pepper shakers, butter dishes, bread baskets, etc, there is not much room left for all of the food.

We normally have two different types of roasted meats.  Homemade from scratch pasta with different type of meats in the sauce served separately ...pork, meatballs and chicken, plus mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a dish of corn, and one of mixed veggies, plus two different types of salads and bowls of salad dressing, cheese shakers for the pasta, gravy, etc....there is no room to put everything.  I have three tables set up, plus four seats at my breakfast bar.

It is just so much easier to set up a buffet table.  When we have a holiday meal, we go all out.  And because we are Italian, we always serve the pasta as the first course.

At Christmas time, it is worse...add Italian Wedding soup and Sarma to the mix.

I love leg of lamb...yumm.  I serve that for Easter,   I had lamb chops for dinner last night.  I'd love to be invited to your table.

Re: Random survey - gravy boats

had one the was 2 pieces but the base was heated with a plug and you lifted the pouring part out to use--that was pretty handy.

@aubnwa01 That is a beautiful dish!  You need to use it!!!!  Even if you put Hershey's kisses in it!
