Our 10 year old GE is dying.  Repairs costly and it being 10 ... Any brand recommendations out there?  I know Bosch is supposed to be good but a little high priced for us.  Thanks!!

Re: New Dishwasher

[ Edited ]

@bargainsgirl - Consumer Reports just named Bosch as the highest rated brand dishwasher.

My Bosch dishwasher is still going strong, 18 years old and looks and cleans like new.

Same as my Bosch washing machine!  If either one dies after all this time, I'll buy Bosch again.

ETA:  I've never had a repair on either of my Bosch machines.  Unlike the cr*p Maytags I had that didn't even last 7 years and never worked right.  The dishwasher would never dispense the rinse aid from the get-go and they couldn't figure out why so basically said "live with it".  So much for a warranty!

The Maytag (expensive) washer was part of a class-action lawsuit - that the dealer didn't tell me about, so I was out of time and luck on that, too.  And the matching Maytag dryer died not long after.

Never, ever have another Maytag in this house!

I have had multiple dishwashers over the years ..different brands.  I get about 4 years out of them, while needing repairs long before then...mostly water pumps.

My current dishwasher is a GE profile. I have had it longer than any other brand, about 5 years already with no problems.  I use my dishwasher a lot..every day, sometimes twice a day.

If I ever need a replacement, I will get another GE.  If you got 10 years from your current dishwasher, that is wonderful.  Why would you be looking for a different brand?

I have never owned a Bosch, but I have owned Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Maytag and Kenmore.

@bargainsgirl I have a Bosch, and I pray every day that it will die.  So far the accursed thing, at least ten years  old, is going strong.  The main selling point when we bought it was that it was supposed to be quiet.  Since we have an open floorplan in our house, that was important, but this Bosch is every bit as loud, and frankly, I believe, louder than our old dishwasher.  It is also insanely slow, needing at least two hours to wash a load to "sanitary" standards.  It requires regular replenishment of some sort of rock salt to soften the water, but I can no longer buy the salt locally, and refuse to pay postage for such heavy material, so it is going to have to do without.  It does not make a difference to the water spotting on the dishes, "softened" or not.  The machine also demands the use of a rinse aide, and without it adds quite a few minutes more to the cycle.  Finally, the water pump is so strong it blows dishes around inside the machine if they are not of some weight, forget using something like Tupperware or Lock-N-Lock unless you can weight it down.  I have actually taken to putting (by now very well washed) rocks on top of some things to hold them down.  If I live long enough to need to buy a new dishwasher, it will absolutely NOT be a Bosch.

@CamilleP  My Bosch is so quiet that a light goes on so you know it is working. I never heard it make a sound and at times I am sitting in the kitchen while it is on.

We bought a GE from Home Depot a few years ago and love it.

It's quiet and has a third rack or tray which I use for tumbler lids and silicone spurtles, etc.

My Bosch is about 5 years old , super quiet as I have open living kitchen space. It does run 2+hours and air dries, I do crack the door open after cycle. It replaced a nightmare Viking dishwasher which was horrible!! Viking was giving them away with stove purchase and now I know why !

I own a KitchenAid.  It's about 5 years old.  Cleans dishes perfectly and have to listen closely if it's on -- super quiet.

We bought a Whirpool about 2 years ago.  The cycles are very long and it seems to run for a long time (2 hr. 57 min).  It does clean very well but the silverware caddie is too small.  Make sure you look at that.  I tried to buy another to fit and it is impossible to find.
