Re: Most Hated Thanksgiving side dishes

I pretty much eat all sides but my favorite is my own stuffing that is prepared and cooked inside the turkey. I find the flavor is so much better when roasted within the bird. My only regret is that the turkey cavity is not large enough to hold more stuffing.

I fix green bean casserole every year. It's a family favorite. 💕

@Etoile308 .....ITA with the sweet potato casserole and marshmallows on top,YUK, too sickeningly sweet. Some people just need to add extra stuff when many times less is more. While not my favorite dish, my family likes them. I make them with a brown sugar and butter glaze only.......no cinnamon either. They're kinda good 😊

I agree with the green been casserole!  I am also sick of pasta salad.  No candies yams either.

I've never liked sweet potatoes or yams, candied or not. Sweet potato pie...yuck. I will only eat Russet potatoes.

@PhilaLady1  I don't care for the sweet potatoes or yams either. A big no to the pie...

The other thing I can't even look at is ham.  Someone always brings some as a side entree for Thanksgiving.  No pink meat for me.  🤢

I like it all except for that awful green bean casserole and I wasn't crazy about the creamed onions mother used to make.  Preparing them was pure torture.

@Kachina624   Oh my... just had a flashback to when my mom would make liver and onions for my dad.  The smell was nauseating.  🤢

[ Edited ]

I never had green bean casserole in my life until last year.  My sister's son who now lives in VA made it and I tried it .

I ended up bringing what was left of it home with me!

I was looking forward to it this year but he can't join us.

Growing up, our Thanksgiving table never had anything green at all.  Totally Autumnal shades.  Squash, turnip, boiled onions, cauliflower, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and stuffing.  All yellow, gold and ivory!

I thought for years that I was the only person on earth who didn't like (hated, despised, loathed, detested) stuffing but in the last few years I have met one or two others.  I dislike sweet potatoes but I could probably swallow them if it was an Amazing Race detour challenge.

I took a small serving of that sweet potato and marshmallow thing one year when a southern friend made it and I think that single small serving is the reason I have Type 2 diabetes today.

How about cider?  We always had a jug of Bessey's apple cider which was probably more akin to apple juice since it was clear enough to read through.

As a result of this I was shocked to see what real apple cider looks like.  That cloudy stuff looks so bad I can't even bring myself to try it.

Hubbs most hated side dishes: cranberries, yams, pumpkin pie. His most loved: green bean casserole. As for me; As a vegetarian I like the veggies, too much sugar in the cb(I skip those) mashed potaties (meh) and the pie also has too much sugar.

Do you think that is why we don't get invited out for TG?

Mashed potatoes (nobody in my family liked them); sweet potatoes with marshmallows on them (we preferred just baked ones); green casserole (tried it once and nobody ate it--went back to plain green beans).

It was a more or less healthy meal at our house (dressing cornbread, mushroom soup, onions and mushrooms--no eggs, no turkey grease), until you got to the six pies and a cake.

@Sooner Sounds like my family's Thanksgiving!  A more healthy meal with plain vegetables (however there is always gravy and cranberry sauce) but enough cake & pie for each person to have their own!  LOL!
