Re: Lock n lock egg container and mold

I use four of these all the time - two that hold 18 eggs and two that hold a dozen. I get farm eggs, and never put into the L&L until after they have been refrigerated. I also NEVER wash the eggs until ready to use.

Better to use white vinegar than any kind of chlorine bleach to clean out your L&L containers once you have mold.

Re: Lock n lock egg container and mold

Thanks for all your responses. It never dawned on me that the mold spores would still be there after washing.

This is exactly what I was thinking, and be sure to remove and soak the seal in bleach water, and get q-tips into the "well" that the seal sits in.

It wouldn't hurt to dry it good, then let it air dry for a couple of days before reusing. Make sure eggs are dry when placed in and if it happens still, might be time to give up on it. I agree with making sure the eggs are cold too.

I use the egg containers too, and I've only had a very slight problem with it one time, and after cleaning and drying it went away.

I do just the opposite of Deadeye Daisy, in that I take my straight from the farm eggs home and wash and dry them very well before storing. Don't know if you are using store eggs or farm eggs, but fresh from the farm will often have straw, droppings, feather pieces and other stuff on them that I don't feel comfortable putting in the fridge with my other foods, so I always clean them (although I have read that eggs have some kind of natural coating to keep them fresh and shouldn't be washed till ready to use) right away, and have never had trouble with freshness, as they keep up to a couple of months.
