It really depends on whom you speak to.

Pasta salad (pasta fredda) is a salad dish prepared with one or more types of pasta, almost always chilled, and most often tossed in a vinegar, oil, or mayonnaise-based dressing. It is typically served as an appetizer, side dish or a main course.

*So it's pasta with several dressings".

Re: If You Had To Pick......

I like both but rarely have either one because of the carb content.  My preference would be potato salad though.

As a general statement (since I have about twenty recipes for both potato salad and macaroni salad), I prefer potato salad.

Re: If You Had To Pick......

I always make a version called Salad Oliviyeh, my husband is from Iran and this is their version of potato salad.  Everyone I make it for loves it and requests it at events.  It has chicken and olives in it and the potatos are not chunks they are usually shredded.  It is so delicious I really don't care for american potato salad anymore.  Only bad part is it takes hours to make and is a lot of work!
