There are some versions of potato salad I don't like. So, I'd probably prefer a pasta salad - I like just about all of them.

potato salad would be my top choice.......specifically deviled egg potato salad OR german potato salad.
i call it macaroni salad if it is a side dish and i do like that also.
i call it pasta salad if it is more of a main dish.

@amyb It is the same here. We make potato salad or macaroni salad (using elbows) or pasta salad as you described. I've seen folks put small cubes of cheese and Italian meats in also always with Italian dressing.
I prefer potato or macaroni salad as a 1st choice. Pasta salad if no other choice.

I always called it macaroni salad but my daughters call it pasta salad (which never has mayonaise).
My little grandson only knows he likes "pasta salad."
What is the difference? The different kinds of "pasta?" The dressing-mayonnaise as opposed to vinagrette?

That potato salad picture was one l googled. Sorry.
As a former Home Economics teacher, I can tell you it had very little mustard.
I'll tell you how I make mine, and Luke Combs, the Entertainer Of The Year is addicted to it.
I only use russet potatoes.
I have 1/3-1/2 8 oz jar sweet pickles chopped. Relish is so small you can't taste it; it also makes potato salad goopy. Look at how much a single hot dog needs!
I chop my fresh celery if I am using it.
For leftovers:
I boil 4 whole unpeeled russet potatoes until barely fork tender. Then put on a paper towel.
In a seperate pan, boil 4 whole large eggs.
Using hot mits, I hold them in my left hand and pull off the skin with an 8" knife.
I chop them in my gloved hand over the bowl.
I peel all of the warm hard boiled eggs, and individually cut in half in my gloved hand.
I discard the yolk (cholesterol).
I chop in my hand over the bowl.
I salt and pepper
Add celery and sweet pickles.
Using a rubber scraper I pull out 1/3 of a jar of Dukes mayonnaise and use 1 good squeeze of mustard.
I cut through the mixture with a large metal spoon.
Sprinkle with paprika.
I love it best when barely chilled, about 3 hours. Cold is good too, but I sit it out a bit.

The difference is potatoes or pasta includes rotini and other noodles, the main ingredient.

Potato. Hands down.

I prefer pasta salads with a vinaigrette dressing. I do NOT like it with mayo.

I love "my" potato salad and the varied types of pasta salads that I have put together (using no specfific recipe) . Potato salad wins out by a small margin, only because potatoes have more nutritional value than pasta
The type of pasta used creates an issue for me. The usual fat little pieces of curled (elbow) macaroni turn me off. Pasta shells, penne, rotini are among more interesting choices, whether in a salad or hot mac & cheese and other pasta dishes.

@on the bay Yes, I read that the difference is a macaroni salad is mayo based, while a pasta salad is vinaigrette.
