A Salty Dog can be made with gin and grapefruit juice. The rim can be salted (like a margarita) or not.  It is one part gin to two parts grapefruit juice.

When I drank, I used to order this minus the salt.  I heard it called a Greyhound.

On the very rare occasion that I might have a mixed cocktail, it's usually a gin and tonic with a lime wedge.

@colleena

 Tanqueray gin  mixed with thawed frozen  concentrate lime juice . When mixing the lime aid do not  dilute with  water use tonic water  and use less than the can  sttes  they call for . make a pitcher and substitute  1 cup of  tonic water for 1 cup of gin

@deepwaterdotter Your memory is correct. It jogged mine. I could only remember Salty Dog which is what I drank in Vegas back in the day. One of my friends ordered the Greyhound (no salt), but I could not remember the name. Thanks.

Edited to add: I salted my grapefruit until I had to stop eating it because of acid reflux. It really complements the flavor.

@colleenaThe Tipsy Bartender dot com site has drink recipes by alcohol type.  Lots of recipes for gin there.

Okay, good thing I don't have any commitments tomorrow am.  I tried gin w/tonic, 7up & lemonade & I don't like any of it - I guess I really don't like gin.  Thanks all.

In the summer we like gin, lemon and 7.  A shot or 2 of gin, a half lemon squeezed and 7up or sprite.  We even throw in a couple of olives.  Refreshing and good.

Gin is made from the juniper bush hence the "bushy" taste.

Mmmm....as for me...I love a Bombay Sapphire, extra dry martini with several olives, up or on the rocks. But I also like Vodka martinis same way...and these days I think vodka is less hash on my system.

But, as someone else mentioned here....I just love a good (and by that I mean all real ingredients, no overly sweet, flavored mix)

Tom Collins~so refreshing and was one of my first drinks back in the day. Wish I was somewhere sunny & warm sipping one now!😎

For a while it became "out of date" in restaurants...but maybe now with all the "craft cocktails" of old back in style, you can find a real one out there. So good. 🍹🍸

@amyb - I was just going post the same thing. We are big fans of Bombay Sapphire - it has a much smoother taste, imo.

@riley1 Yes, much smoother! And when I think...also "back in the day" I drank Beefeater, 'cuz that's what my dad (not really a drinker but every now and then liked his Beefeater martini!) initiated me to the world of martinis, having me taste his.

Now that seems like engine oil to me, lol! It did make a nice dry martini, but it's harsh compared to something like Bombay.💙
