Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

My biggest disaster was recently when I thought I might be "The Pioneer Woman" and cook fried chicken...well, that didn't turn out too well.

I filled the dutch oven with too much OIL and I thought I'd bread the chicken the night before and put in fridge....OH MY...it was like wallpaper paste YET I said "Ok, get the oil hot and just "drop" in"...

NOT...I almost caught my kitchen on fire -- (electric stove) the oil ran over and was all over the stove ... needless to say, what a horrible mess & I am certainly NO Pioneer Woman...its KFC for us or Publix when the fried chicken urge comes on! LOL

2nd one:

I was hosting a family gathering and my sister was making the coffee bar -- she asked me where the sugar was -- I told her BUT she filled with SALT....oh my we sure had "salty" coffee & tea.  From then on I clearly marked all my pantry things!!!

Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

@Harpa   Many, many years ago was interrupted while prepping a huge batch of brownies from scratch for a school function for my daughter.  Forgot to add the sugar.

October, 2017, baked a from scratch chocolate cake for someone's birthday party and added way too much Kosher salt in error.

Both times I forgot to follow measure everything and set out first, and secondly, was trying to bake too late at night when I was overtired.  I am a nightowl, but even for me it was too late.

I now have a glass top stove in the place I rent.  Significant other has a bad habit of putting a spoon rest on the stove and lighting the wrong burner and walking away with a silicone tipped set of tongs, one side of which melted.  Luckily I was able to clean it off without scratching the surface.  Mad hot spoon rest that I moved off the stove I stupidly put on my expensive wood cutting board and left a burn ring.  Should have dropped it on the stainless steel surface instead.

I have stupidly let a pot with rutabagas in it burn dry.  I now watch more carefully and set a premature timer.

I'm sure I've had more bloopers than this, but those are the ones that stand out to me.

Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

I have had many over the years. I thought of one that actually happened to my mom. Soon after my mom & dad were married mom invited her sister & husband, mom & dad, & my dad's brother & his wife. Well she made pizza & she worked on it all day. She made the dough & sauce from scratch. Well they set down to eat & the crust was as hard. She said everyone sat there & chewed & crunched never saying a word. She said years later they sat around laughing about it.

I made tuna casserole and forgot to add the tuna no one even noticed until I found the can of tuna unopened on the counter.

I had a pan of boiled eggs run dry one day.  The  explosion, plus what it did to the paint on the walls near the stove, was pretty amazing....like a science experiment gone bad.

And maybe I could tell the story about the old days when DH liked deep-fried chicken made at home, and  the huge can of hot Crisco grease that managed to slip out of my hands, and the major cleanup that followed, and then what happened when the same can of grease slipped out of my hands again, and the more hours spent cleaning that up..................

And to think, the OP asked if anyone ever has cooking

disasters?

As some might guess, that chicken-frying incident was the last time any fried chicken was ever cooked in our house again.  No Crisco ever used for anything, either.  (Back then, we didn't even know it was poison in a can.)

@novamc1   RE: the Crisco accident, it is a darn good thing you did not end up slipping and landing on your behind in the middle of the greasy floor, especially since it was dropped 2 times.

Here is one that I forgot.  If I remember correctly, my husband and I were having a very uncomfortable discussion and he made a snide insult about the dinner I prepared and was in the middle of serving. I told him he could have his dinner in a different way, I took the plate of spaghetti and sauce and threw it on the kitchen floor.  Need I tell you about all the sauce and noodles hanging and dripping down and off the wall and all over the floor.  The kids thought it was hilarious, I was mad as h---, my husband then wished he had kept his mouth shut because he had to clean up the mess!   That was so out of context for me and I never did things like that and still don't, but at the moment of his insult, it seemed like the most "appropriate" action.....

Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

One of my most memorable incidents was homemade brownies....

Remember when they first came out with granulated sweetener... I made a batch of brownies from the recipe printed on the box... well....they turned out like sponges...

My cousin and his wife were over to visit and he took a bite.... He was choking it down... then he said "gees, all I have to do now when I'm hungry is to drink some water"... we laughed and laughed..... he never let me forget about those brownies.....

I then gave one to my dog and she took it outside and barried it in the yard..... she wouldn't even eat it.....

My cousin is no longer with us, but his wife still reminds me of the brownies.....

Oh, the fun times we've had!

Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

YES!  I've been hosting our Mom's birthday each year for over 30 yrs.  In my 30s I cooked her birthday cake from scratch.  So many years, they turned into disasters.  Comical as family & friends each had their turn poking fun at me.  Once year, it was an "earthquake" cake.  Everyone had such a laugh about it & I cried from laughing so hard .. my brother-in-law's father got angry with everyone for making me cry.  Poor man, he didn't realize it was all in fun.  He calmed down after that.  That's just one of the times, there were many more.

Since I married I started purchasing a cake from the grocery store.  However, to this day, they haven't stopped. Mom just turned 88 last month & of course, we went down memory lane about my famous disaster birthday cakes for Mom.

Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

Told this one before, but, here goes. Apple pie making is out from now on.

Dang apples make to much juice when baking and spilled over in oven and smoked up house and husband was 'put out' let's say. Smoke detectors go off if you f*rt and they went to town that day.

Never again.

Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

Smiley Happy

Well, I could certainly go on writing cooking/baking disasters by chapter & verse!

Forgetting I had water on to boil...blowing up my freshly baked peach pies...dropping a bowl of hard-worked, yeast-risen dough...forgetting to include the meat in hoagies-for-sale "Ralph Kramden" venture...recipes tried that I ended up throwing out...Pizelles sticking to the iron (haven't made them since, and they are my favorite cookie)...many other cookie disasters, etc., etc., etc.

Re: Anyone Ever Have Cooking Disasters?

I once grabbed the celery seed instead of the caraway seed for sauerkraut.

Since I only had that one can of sauerkraut I had no choice but to try to rinse all those tiny, teeny seeds off.
