No apparent Turkey shortage in SE Pennsylvania either.
‎11-21-2021 04:40 PM
Just a thought....every year when turkeys are at a sale price, some of my family members buy a few extra and donate all but one to either homeless kitchen, food pantries, or churches. There will be many this year that will not have a thanksgiving dinner as most are living very lean due to the high cost of everything right now.

@gardenman - No shortage in So. Cal according to the grocery ads. In fact, several stores are selling them for 49 cents/lb with $25.00 purchase which isn't hard to do with prices the way they are. You mention you are in So. Jersey. I was born in So.Jersey many yrs. ago and lived in Collingswood and Cherry Hill before my family moved to So. Cal. Where in So. Jersey are you? I miss Jersey tomatoes!!!!

@gardenman wrote:I got my turkey this morning and still no shortage. I was planning on picking it up at Walmart, but they had no potatoes, so I was having to go to my local (six miles away) Acme for the potatoes, so I grabbed a turkey there. I got a nice 10.97-pound turkey at $0.99 per pound.
By the way, if you have an Acme near you and you don't use their app, you're costing yourself a lot of money. Today I got the turkey, six frozen soft pretzels, four ears of frozen corn (the full-sized ears,) two really nice russet baking potatoes, and a bag of steak fries, and with my discounts, the total came to $15.96. They gave me $5 off just for showing up. I saved $10.63 by using their app on just this one shopping trip. Their "normal" prices are high, but once they learn what you buy, they tend to give you good deals on it going forward. You add things you want to your app and when you check out you just type your phone number into the payment pad thing and get your discounts.
What do I look for in a turkey? I look for a nicely shaped turkey with no flat spots. Turkeys are typically flash-frozen while hanging on hooks and then bagged afterward. They should look symmetrical and have no flat spots. A flat spot indicates the turkey was at least partially thawed at some point after flash-freezing and then refrozen. A turkey that's not nicely shaped indicates it likely thawed at some point and got twisted/mangled a bit. I don't really care what brand it is. I find there to be very few differences from one brand to another. I just look for a nicely shaped turkey without flat spots and it works out well for me. I've been doing this for more than 40 years now with no real trouble. (There was the one time they didn't include the neck and giblets in a turkey and I almost turned the poor thing inside out looking for them. "They have to be in there someplace!" Nope. It turns out they don't. Not if the packer forgot to put them in.)
And @gardenman --don't they (Acme) give you a discount if you are wearing your Eagles garb on game day?
ETA: Oops, I saw you were there yesterday. Well, *the birds* had a good day today!

I live in Pennsville, way down in Salem county. I shopped a lot in Cherry Hill over the years. I did a lot of shopping on route 38 with Two Guys, Tisa's pet shop, Cherry Hill Mall, Crazy Eddie's, and more.

Yeah, another 5% off I believe. Acme's "normal" prices are pretty high, but if you take advantage of their discounts you can save a lot.

Yep. We live in New Hampshire. Our supermarket was stocked with all size, and brands of turkeys. More expensive than last year, but still well within reach.

The stores here donate turkeys to the food pantries. Churches and charities. The monthly Child Tax Credit payments went out recently so that will be a big help for struggling families.

No problem in getting turkeys. Still some shortages with food. But it's the distributors not be able to delliver to stores. Distribution problem is going to be around for a long time.
