I am at a loss to understand how a "closed" mine can produce so much rough. Somewhere there must be an overflowing warehouse full of it. Destined for a shopping channel that is also full...

Well, you see, there was this bucket...

That bucket must be as large as an industrial size dumpster!!

When I first started watching TV shopping shows back in the early 90s, all I heard was how tanzanite was going to become extinct and we must buy it right away because it will be gone.

That was almost 25 years ago, and tanzanite is still readily available.

The quality tanzanite IS hard to find. The very light color almost lavender stuff they pass off is garbage. Good tanzanite has strong flashes of red, and is deep in bluish purple with obvious color change.

It is stabilized by impregnating it with some sort of clear acrylic to keep the color stable. All commercially sold turquoise is stabilized otherwise skin oils, lotions, soaps, hair spray, perfume etc. will cause it to turn icky green.

I ADORE turquoise and wear it year round. However, although the Sleeping Beauty is beautiful, sometimes it looks like plastic to me when there is absolutely no matrix. Having picked up several amazing turquoise pieces in Mexico, I have grown to appreciate the interest that matrix adds.

I am in complete agreement with everything you said.

I agree. Matrix makes your stone "unique".

It is very difficult to mass market turquoise with matrix because each piece will be different. Really different. So people order using the sample as an example, then what they get has little or no matrix...back it goes. That's why SB has been an answer to the video merchandizer's prayers. It all looks exactly alike. You could sell composite like Jay King does. It all has matrix...sort of, and it's all the same since it's manufactured.

Too much turquoise? No way! I love Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. Levian sells the more expensive Persian Turquoise that I also love, but this is a nice alternative.

Persian turquoise is not available. Hasn't been for many years. You can find some old pieces on eBay and that's it. I spent hours online one day and could only find one person selling any stones, in Saudi Arabia. He didn't have much. There are two mines in Iran and both are closed.

It is never enough for me either ! And I am in love with Sleeping Beauty ! Levian doesn't sell Persian anymore. I have a few of their pieces from the past years and when I wanted to change the stones in some of them( they turned green) couple of years ago their representative told me that they use Chinese material now.

I have one gorgeous piece of Persian, set in a ring in 18K gold... I bought it years ago from an estate jeweler at a price that would now be considered a real bargain... I rarely wear it. Silly, I know, but I could never replace it and the gemstone is set beautifully, but is somewhat 'prone' so I save it for special occasions... Of course, once in a while, simply wanting to wear it and gaze on it is special occasion enough...

Oh gosh, that's too bad! Makes me think I'll be even more protective of my one piece...

Apparently the Persian was not stabilized so be very careful it if you have some.
