I've been scammed by 2 different washing machine/dryer repairmen - years apart. They pretend they're replacing part - and they actually do nothing. That's why the machine breaks down again. Now - I learned to stand there when they replace a part and ask for the old part -- but at 9 years, I would be replacing.

How long should a good washer and dryer last?I bought mine 8 years ago and they're starting to make funny noises. I suspect that we might be entering the "nickel-and-diming-to-death" era and I think I might not bother repairing them but just keep using them till they finally give up for good.

I'm especially anxious to get rid of my front loader machines because it really hurts my back to bend down to use those things. Can anyone recommend top loaders that are good quality? It doesn't have to top quality because it's just three senior adults in my family--no small children's dirty clothes (although sometime I could fit into that category because I love to go out in the garden and get dirty).

I don't think washer and dryers last much beyond 8 or 10 years any more.  Though I did have a whirlpool washer and dryer that lasted almost 12 years.  I ended up replacing them with LG's front loaders and have been happy with them except that we moved across country and I don't think the washer is as quiet as it once was.  Our moving truck broke down, or belongings were moved around a lot and I don't think they were treated with soft hands.  I have heard that Maytags are very good.  I would stay far away from anything Kenmore.

Re: Washer and dryer

[ Edited ]

I have a Samsung front loader washer and dryer set and absolutely love them. They have cut my laundry time down by more than half.

We did purchase the drawer (stacks) units for them to sit on and so glad we did. Very efficient units.

They look great, too.
