@bichon momIf you haven't moved in yet or aren't all settled, I would say this is the time to get rid of them.
There is nothing scientific about removing them--water and a scraper, but I am sure it makes a holy mess which can be somewhat contained by hanging plastic in each doorway.
Whether or not you want to do this probably depends on several things:
Is this your dream home?
Are you there for the long haul?
Will they take away from your design aesthetic?

@bichon mom There is an alternative. It also isn't necessarily inexpensive but it might be less costly than removing the popcorn and a bit less messy and that is to have a thin layer of drywall installed over the ceilings. This is essentially what @RedTop was suggesting and it's a good idea.

The absolute best part of popcorn ceilings is when they were just classy enough to have bits of sparkle on the tips.
It was enough to wipe a tear to your eye.

I think people hate them so much because they are considered dated. Of course who came up with that? Probably interior designers drumming up business. They have to tell everyone every few years something is dated so that people will want to "update" to the tune of thousands of dollars.

My popcorn ceilings have sparkly glitter on them. I actually like it because it adds a little bling to my home.![]()

My ceilings and walls are both lightly textured.
But, if the ceilings were the popcorn - I think at these prices I would just have popcorn ceilings - I could seriously think of a jillion other things to update a home that would make more of a difference!
Keep your ceilings the same color as your walls if you can, and that will blend it all together nicely. If you have any trim around where the wall meets the ceiling - also paint that the same color also - in other words - blend, blend, blend the surfaces - instead of making one stand out. And, seriously - the last thing I look at in someone's home is the ceiling anyhow - keep the wall objects of choice down at eye level also.😀

We had them and I got to hate them after many years. Seemed so "dated" even though I don't make a point of keeping up with trends. Also, they say it affects resale value --I have no plans to sell though. When we did new carpet and had most of the house painted, we had them removed. (about 5 years ago) I like the new look so much better.
