After having a car for 18 yrs, I got a new 2025 in March. The dealer wants me to get an oil change after 6 months, but I only have 1023 mi on it. I don't think I need it yet, but someone said if i don't I void the warranty. And it is not free--a coupon for $39.95!
Comments appreciated.

Read the manual and/or call the manufacturer of the car. Strangers on a forum are not necessarily the best source of information, especially since you did not provide the make and model of the car. It sounds standard to me, but it has been a long time since i bought a car. In any event, I think that you need to read the manual thoroughly.

New engines have break-in periods in the beginning where there are micro pieces of metal normally coming off of internal parts as the engine moves. It's normal but an oil change is needed to prevent the micro metal pieces from damaging the engine. After the break-in period then normal oil change intervals take effect.

Yes, you need to have the oil changed at 1000 miles.

Yes very important for the first 1000.00 miles. When you get a new car all the tiny metal fragments from the factory are coming loose and will get in oil, that in return is running through your engine. Take your dipstick out touch the oil , rub it between your fingers, it will probably feel like dirt. Should be silky smooth. After first oil change then every 3000,to 5000 miles is fine. Changing your oil is probably the best low maintenance thing you can do for your car.

DON'T go to those "quickie--while you wait" places if you value your car. They use recycled oil.

@geegerbee new cars years ago wanted oil changed after 1000 miles engine break in
seems like they said metal parts wear off new new metal engine parts thus the reason

I got a new car in August, 2024. And needed the car inspected in May, 2025.
I took the car in for inspection. The car had 300 miles on the odometer. I did not bother to get the oil changed. My husband said I should have gotten the oil changed. He told me that, after I waited 4 hours at the dealer for the inspection (with appointment). Wonder how long I would have had to wait if I did want the oil changed.
Guess I should have had the oil changed.
