It's imperative that you change the break-in oil, whether you think it's needed or not. Failure to comply could potentially void your warranty.

I always purchase new vehicles and never have they recomended the first oil change at 1,000 miles. Check your owners manual. The last few cars I purchased were GM products and the first oil change was free and provided by the manufacturer and the second was free provided by the dealership. Not at 1,000 miles though. In fact many of the new cars will tell you when they need to be serviced and give you a read on the "life" of your oil. The 1,000 mile seems to be a fall back to the old days. Something my grandfather had said.

Yes, because sometimes new cars are outfitted with an oil designed for new engines that requires changing out at a certain point. If that's the case, doing so benefits the longevity of the engine. An oil change is less costly than a repair.
