We have a King size pillowtop mattress that is about 12 years old. It was supposed to be a good brand but has developed a "dent" on each side where we sleep. I'm wondering if a mattress topper would be a good fix for this? Does anyone have any experience with any toppers such as the best brand or type?

For many people, including myself, memory foam is hot. Even the stuff that is supposed to be open cell technology or cool max makes me sweat.
I prefer a down alternative topper. No allergies like down and no feathers poking through like feather beds.
Try to find a nice, fluffy, fully skirted down alternative is my recommendation. I do think some kind of topper would help extend the life of your mattress.

We bought a new mattress and box spring just a year ago - very good brand and not cheap. In the store, it felt great - firm but a pillowtop. The mattress we received was not as cushiony on the top as the floor model, but I appreciated the amount of firmness/support. My husband has not been thrilled with the bed. A few weeks ago I ordered the Pedicsolutions Gel Memory Topper from here on QVC. OMG, I have a new love for my bed and love the feeling of settling in at night. It's no hotter than the mattress was prior to getting the topper. While it's been a great solution for our issue, I'm not sure it would remedy a mattress that has a couple of valleys. The topper would follow the contour of the mattress surface so you'd still have the dip, it would just be a more cushiony one. My own personal opinion is if you've gotten 12 yrs. out of a mattress, you've gotten your money's worth and it's time to replace it.

I second the latex topper suggestion. I find you don't sink in latex as much as memory foam. I think a topper could somewhat help your situation as it would "fill in" the dips somewhat, but you might still have that hill and valley feeling. Good luck, it's very frustrating the way mattresses are made now, so many of them seem to do this quickly.

Hi mallemo! We have a memory foam topper on our bed which is a lot older than yours! lol We also have a featherbed on top of that and we absolutely love our bed. The feather bed (from the Q) I don't like much because it gets lumpy and despite all the hype that the feathers don't move with the baffle box design they do and we end up with a mound of feathers in the middle of the bed. But we love our memory foam. I would suggest getting the thickest one you can, ours is a 4" thick one and I bought it from Overstock - unfortunately, I don't know what ours is made of. Full disclosure though - I once slept on a bed at a friends house that had a 4" memory foam topper and it was kind of hard to turn over on. I don't know if it was made from something different or the feather bed on top of ours is the difference. Good luck with whatever you decide on!
ETA - I forgot to mention, even though I am past 'that age' neither one of us find it hot at all, even in the summer and it gets very hot where we live.

We also have a 3"" open cell technology memory foam which is hot. I put a Coolmax mattress pad over it & it does help but I still get hot in the summer. In the winter when I keep the thermostat on 60° when we go to bed it's nice. In the summer it's too hot. It's firmer when it's colder & more cushiony in the summer when it's hotter. The temperature in your house & your body heat makes a difference how it feels. I think since you have a dip on each side of the bed you will still have them with any topper you buy. Get a topper until you can buy a new mattress. Buy a mattress without the pillowtop & you can put your topper on it. At least when the topper wears out you may be able to replace it instead of the whole mattress. They don't make mattresses like they used too. I also like latex & want a latex topper. We have latex pillows & love them. You need to know the ILD & density & what it means when buying memory foam or latex so you can buy a firmer or not as firm topper.

It is good. It's now 12 years old and a spring mattress isn't meant to last for 12 years and not show wear, not matter how good it is. If it's just now showing dents, it's exceptional. Were rotating it every 3-6 months? You're supposed to do that to prevent the uneven wear. I'm single and have a really hard time flipping my queen size mattress in my 4-poster frame by myself, so mine almost never gets rotated.
I had that issue with my mattress and I was getting backaches. I bought a 2.5 inch memory foam topper 3 years ago and was able to stave off buying a new mattress, but I think now I'm going to have to do that. I read a lot of reviews before I picked mine out and I went with a Canopy 2.5 inch foam topper. I don't even know if it's still made. It's one of the very few Walmart purchases I've made, but it was worth it.
