We had builder grade cabinets in our Pa home for about 20 years, then we remodeled. Our contractor sent us to a kitchen designer who did the layout, and had the all oak cabinets with all custom made doors, as I wanted bead board doors for a country look.I loved them, and the much better layout made our small kitchen fabulous.

When we built here in Fl. we are back to builder grade cabinets, and even my DH doesn't like them, and talks about replacing them. They are maple - not very well made - medium brown. We have a nice large kitchen here and open concept , so nicer cabinets would be a real bonus to the whole look.

We have friends whose house had pink cabinets when they bought it. They were in perfect condition so , they took them down, rented a professional sprayer and sander. They cleaned them first with some special cleaner, sanded them so the paint would adhere better and painted them, about 3 coats, and replaced the hardware with a more modern style. I believe they hired a handyman to take them down and hang them back up for them. They looked fabulous when finished. They felt they saved about 2/3 what it would have cost to replace them. They painted them ivory.

Does anyone recall back in the 50's when kitchens frequently had metal cabinets? We had those and it seems every time we turned around my Mom had my poor Dad painting them.I can remember them being white, powder blue, peach, yellow & pink.

I well remember those metal cabinets.  The house where I grew up was built in the 1920's, so the metal cabinets most likely were an update from the late 40's.  We moved in in 1955.  The metal cabinets were an off white color but of couse they darkened as they aged.  My mom always liked them, along with a new invention called a dishwasher which very few homes had in 1950.

I live in a civil war town and one of my friends has an historic home here.  The kitchen cabinets are original and very rustic.  It adds a certain charm to the kitchen even though (for my) they are not functional for today's cook.
