Re: For Fun .. your preference of home interiors

I live in a cottage on a lake. I decorate very cottagy. Shabby chic, white/light walls throughout with lots of floor to ceiling doorwalls/windows as entryways to our wrap around porch that face our lake. Light and airy. I had an absolute ball decorating 4 years ago when we rebuilt and moved in upon retirement.

Enjoyed reading your responses. Oznell, I can relate to many things you wrote.

Polished casual is my best decor description. I prefer open concept, lots of sunlight and touches of nature. Wooden blinds and no curtains. Maiden and married names are nature words so we've enjoyed our nature theme. Our guest room is a relaxing, cottage chic. Husband prefers modern farmhouse, so our dining room and mission bedroom set are heavier furniture with dark wood, but I'm able to 'save' the look with interesting lamps and wall art. Oh, well, you know what I mean.

Yours does sound like it would be very "sympatico",  @jeanlake.  By the way, I like the whimsy of your tying in your nature surnames to some of your look-- never thought of that!

I'm glad your home suits your family & wish you many more happy years there.

Hi @ScenicMaine,

Thanks for your sweet good wishes.  Actually, there are very many old towns in CT.  It is amazing.  Must be due to the Connecticut River, north to the sound.  Much easier for early settlers to move up the river rather than chop their way through thick forests.

I'll tell you what bugs me.  Cities who give permits for massive condo and apartment buildings at the waters edge.  They block the view for everyone else, even those driving by.  I've seen it on the ocean in Florida, the edge of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, and certain rivers in our state.

Re: For Fun .. your preference of home interiors

If I have a style, it is very country casual.   I am not a lover of decor; no throws, no pillows, no rugs, no wreaths or floral arrangements, no chatzkes, minimal amount of furniture in a room, and lots of bare walls.

I love color, lots of red, yellow, navy, tan and black in my home.   I do have lots of family pictures thru the house, and feel my home is  very comfortable.   I feel my family roots in every room of this house, and that makes me very happy.

@ID2

Your home sounds ideal.  Love your decorating style.

You're very fortunate to have such a home on a lake with many of the same features I love.  Enjoy your retirement home, you've earned it.  Woman Happy

Some towns I was thinking of .. Norwich, Mystic, Groton, etc.

That's interesting .. I never thought about the settlers on the river for travelling.  But, you're right.

And, don't you just love all of the stone walls on so many properties throughout NE?

The CT River travels thru many NE States with history.

@depglass

I hear ya ... everyone wants the view.  That's what I was referring to  in ME with the new, huge homes built on the cliff, blocking the older, settled in homes that were there first .. on the other side of the street.  Not fair to them & makes their taxes much higher as well.  As we walk along the beach & look up to the Nubble Lighthouse, all of the new homes have totally changed the landscape - & in our opinion, not for the better.

So don't I, but I would never build something new to accomplish that.  If I was ever fortunate to get my dream home, it would need to be an existing one.

I admire everyone with their own unique styles.  You've made it to your own taste & most important, you're happy there.  That's what really counts.

Continue enjoying many more years there.
