My cousin has a firepit (built in) and it is also away from the house, at the back of his large lot. It is nice to visit while sitting around it. But we all grew up camping and it is second me nature for us to sit and gab around a fire...

While firepits may be "trendy" for some, I think those who get them because they know they will use them vs. getting them because they are in fashion at the moment are smart.

Our Pa. campsite was once a childrens camp - where city kids would come and stay the entire summer. There were barracks with fireplaces back then. Somewhere along the way the barracks were knocked down but the fireplaces were left, so a select few of us have an outdoor fireplace in our campsite. It's so much nicer than an open fire pit because the smoke goes up the chimney , not in your face. We lucked out to get a site that has one as there are only a few.
