Re: Favorite feature of your current home

I love everything about our home. Everything was customized for the three of us. It’s a ranch and open concept on a basement. I love there are no steps to have to maneuver. Not even out to the garage. We love the open concept and it is so easy to clean. We have a huge kitchen with a double island. The bedrooms are oversized which is so nice.  The view we have sitting on two acres in front of a woods is so pretty.

i love the Art Deco designs which is present throughout my home.

beautiful elaborate master carpentry art deco design repeated on window frames and door frames, decorative moldings, on kitchen and built in dining room cabinets, and fireplace mantle.

matching art deco light fixtures with crystal shades from the early 30s through the front half of the house.

leaded glass windows, some arched,  in beveled, shaped art deco designs, even in the cut of the bathroom mirror and two built in, full length mirrors.

small, colorful floor tiles in art deco designs in front hall, bathroom, and fireplace hearth.

and arches!!

arches over the stove, above the shower, the whole entrance hallway is arched, twin built in arched bookcases, arched ceiling in dining room, arches dividing areas, and all done in plaster. not a pre-formed drywall arch or wall anywhere.

what i don't like is the bathroom door is in direct eyeline with the side door entrance.

I'm green with envy! I love older homes, and yours sounds like it has enough character for two homes. So send me some please! LOL

@SXMGirl Your comments about the neighborhood struck me. As much as I love our home (and I helped to design some of it), it's all about our neighborhood. Most of us have been here since our kids were born over 35 years ago. We've been through births, marriages and deaths together. When my kids were young, I would ask them "what do you want to do for your birthday?" Their answer was always "have the neighbors in for pizza!"  Now, the neighborhood is aging and moving away. New families are moving in, but it's not the same.

@PA Mom-mom

There is a certain sadness to staying 'too long' in a neighborhood that is growing old and changing.

This happened where I grew up. The neighborhood was half older people and half young families. The older people died off about the time all the kids from the families grew up and moved on. As the houses sold, and new people moved in, things were not the same. All the old bonds were broken, and the neighborhood has never been as cohesive as it was back then.

Great memories, but sad as things change. Ah, the cycle of life.

20 years ago when we bought it I loved the garden tub in our master bath.  20 years later and I don't do baths anymore, just showers.  Knees just don't work like they used to and getting in and out of it is just too much work, nearly impossible.  You don't think about those things when you are young, but 20 years down the road, not a pretty picture.  I miss the days of soaking in a nice hot bubble bath, showers are just not as relaxing.

@rustysmom

I'm right there with you! I haven't had a bath in a decade or more (ok now, I do take a shower every day!! lol).

Our home was built in 1973, and during that time, bathrooms were tiny and minimally functional. Our bathtub is shallow and short. Leprechauns would find it roomy, but no one else!

Getting down in and back out of that little thing has made baths a thing of the past with my knees. I certainly do miss soaking in a tub now and then!

I love our huge kitchen.  It was supposed to be a kitchen and separate dining room but when my parents had it built, they opted to just make it one big room.

My absolute favorite thing about my house is my kitchen sink.  LOL  I know that sounds ridiculous but we have been remodeling our kitchen and about a year ago we got new granite countertops and we replaced our old, porcelain double sink with one big undermount silgranit sink. I love that thing.  We've had several people come over and comment on the sink and how they wish they had done that.  It's huge and very deep.

My favorite thing about the layout of my house overall is that it's not an open concept.  There are defined rooms which I prefer.

@Lipstickdiva

I'm only a fan of an open concept home when it is in the model stage. When they are staged for showing, they are big and open and tidy and enticing.

When you live in them, and the slightest of mess in one room can be seen from every room, they loose their charm in a hear beat!

As someone who grew up in a large city with only street parking, I have quite the affection for my attached garage.

@Bird mama

We have an attached garage too, and I was 35 before I had this luxury. I have to say, I never want to go back to either no garage or a detached one.

People who don't have or don't use their attached garages have no idea what they are missing! It was something that became 'essential' after just a couple of weeks here. I can't imagine living without one, as long as I have a car and can drive!

Re: Favorite feature of your current home

I live in a large condo with an attached garage. It's an open floor plan so the kitchen, dining and living room all flow toward my covered patio. It's perfect for me because I entertain a lot. I am obsessively neat, so it poses no problem for me.

I have a large, walk in pantry in my kitchen and that was large part of why I fell in love with this place.

The living room area has a wall of Windows and I have beautiful mountain views and sunrises.
