If you gave them as gifts, you should tell the gift recipients that they need to stop using the heater, it could catch fire. When you get the information (letter) as someone else said, they will probably tell you to cut the cord and mail the cord to them and they will then issue a refund. My guess is that they want you to do that, to be sure that you (or whoever you gave them to) are no longer using the heater.
They don't want you to continue to use it, so they will only give you a refund if you return the cord. At least they aren't expecting you to return the whole heater and have to try to pack that up. That would be a pain in the butt!
I guess tell the people you gave the heater to that you will get them another gift.
It's a bummer ....I agree. I really liked my heater.
