To me what makes a house a cottage are architectural details like porches and at least 2 or 3 different roof gables, and just a homey vibe.The yard has a lot to do with it too.

@Mominohio

Cottages aren't necessarily very small.  Some of the posted photos are, of course, of smaller homes.

Cottage can also mean cute, charming, etc. architectural features.  Like some of those homes in Carmel, CA, that are "normal" size but look like something out of a fairytale.  (Wish I could afford to live there!)

Picture 1 is of a Carmel cottage-style home; picture 2 is a more classic cottage (this one is in Atlanta, per Google).

Would love to see some of your own favorites.  You always have the best home ideas for inside and out.

I live at the end of a country road in a Gamble cape. It is too big for us but we don’t want to move. We have four bedrooms and it is a lot to clean. We both agree we will stay as long as we can.

@OKPrincess

That's why I picked that one house - love those porches!  I can just imagine being there.

I love all your choices, @LIG1

This one looks like it's on Nantucket.

@GingerPeach...that would be a show!!  I inherited this home from his first marriage....they only lived here together for a few months, but she just HAD TO HAVE a  new house to save the marriage, then she walked out.  DH is one of those guys that would do his best to make you happy, unfortunately I am paying the price.

It is a nice home but nothing I would have picked out and I have made it mine but I have always wanted to house hunt and find 'my home'.....
