Re: Declutter 2021: What have you purged today?

@gidgetgh, honestly I think if the books bring a smile to your face, why not keep them, at least for now, if you find later on you don't feel the same, you can donate them or sell them at that time. Why deny yourself that small pleasure when you don't have to?

Resting from the "declutter" work this weekend y'all~put your feet up and enjoy your accomplishments and progress so far, this holiday weekend!

Unless...of course...you're feeling like using the time to clear out more stuff 'cuz it's a long weekend and you have the time...then go for it!

Either way~Happy, safe weekend. 😎

Ok, so remember my framed cross stitch projects a few months back that I didn't know what to do with?  I ended up keeping a few, threw away the rest and, to be honest, haven't thought of them since.

So, I have another group of things I don't know what to do with.

When I was a child, in the 60's, I had 2 series of books that I adored (in addition to my beloved Nancy Drew Books).

One series I got through the Weekly Reader.  The series was Ginnie and Geneva.  They were paperbacks.

The 2nd series was Donna Parker.  They were hardcover.

Now, I don't have MY books, but several years ago, I pieced together the 2 series from Ebay.  Bought them all. I re-read all the Ginnie and Geneva books (and remembered the plots!).

So, I have all those books.  Between the 2 series, it is 14 books.  What to do with these?  I loved them and when I see them in our small bookcase I smile, but I haven't re-read the Donna Parker books and don't know that I ever will.  They don't take up much room at all, they are 14 children's books, but I am torn about them.

Sometimes, it's enough for me to take a picture.  And the picture provides the memory.  But I am a little stuck on these books. Is it a big deal to keep the books and move them with me when I move?  No, but if I am never going to read them again....

@gidgetgh - These are tough decisions for sure. Personally, if I smiled every time I saw them, I'd probably keep them, even if it meant never reading them again. Sometimes we just have to keep things around us that make us happy and feel good, even if it doesn't have any other real practical value. If your feelings change someday down the road, you can part with them then.

[ Edited ]

Well now @gidgetgh ....imho...KEEP THESE! At least for now...my thoughts...1st "Marie Kondo" style...they are still bringing you JOY...you have a place for them "your small bookshelf"..."they make you so happy to see them there!!"

Sometimes...I totally agree...that picture thing (unless it's a picture of a large framed picture I no longer wish to keep around) a pic doesn't do for me what the actual object does.

As I said...they have a "proper place" right now...don't seem like "clutter" to me.

I have a small stack of old favorite childhood books (my originals)...they sit on a lower shelf of a side table...in a little display of things that go together. They are a nod to my childhood, and they look cute and retro there. I used to have a little doll sitting on top, (the top book is Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm...the doll kind of looked like it went there. But then I decided I didn't want dolls all through the home...so just a few are in my bedroom armoire now.)

I think these are not junk, nor clutter. I would keep. Smiley Happy

Re: Declutter 2021: What have you purged today?

@RedTop - I am sorry to hear of the loss of your pet. But I can relate to feeling glad to have some space back.

We lost one of our 4 dogs about a month ago. She was 16 or 17 but we only had her about 2 years and 3 months. From the time we got her we always put her in my extra large dog crate behind our couch when we went away because I ddin't trust her out free to either not make a mess or fight with one of our other dogs when we were gone.

When she died I put the crate away for the first time in over 2 years. I was glad to have it gone out of our living room and not have to keep looking at it too.

I still have 3 more dogs here and while I love them, I am looking forward to maybe being down to just one someday. We still have 2 large dog beds on my bedroom floor and one large one in the dining room. Along with a huge water bowl, food bowls, 50lb bags of kibble in the pantry, etc. It's a lot.

Re: Declutter 2021: What have you purged today?

Thanks everyone, I'm keeping the books.  I really do practice the Marie Kondo philosophy of decluttering and these books do bring me joy, so decision made.  Thanks for reminding me of my Marie Kondo "brings me joy" philosophy.

Sometimes I think I get a little caught up in the "I have to pack and move all this stuff" when the time comes.

Well I went through my closet and drawers again today looking for things to discard. Guess what? I didn't want to throw any of it away.  That little hoarder voice in me was telling me to hold on to stuff. I have a pair of embroidered espadrilles that are about 4" tall and I haven't worn in about 4 years. I didn't want to get rid of them because I said maybe  I'll need them. Well after coming here and being reminded about MK and sparking joy, I'm going to go back and lose certain items that I am holding, and making monetary and other excuses about; including those gaucho pants I wore twice and the chain link design blouse! I'll revisit here with an update! 😆
