Re: Bedroom design question.

Love the pics. Thanks, lola! I have a large window at the head of the bed, so no wall décor possible, but it's nice to see all the different options.

I guess I'm lucky, in a way. We have huge windows on two walls. Its in our fire code, they have to be able to get you out.

How about a wreath or a swag of some sort!

That's what we have over our bed -- a floral swag. You can choose a design with silk or dried florals that harmonizes with the colors and style of your bedding and decor. They're lightweight, relatively inexpensive, easy to hang, and you can find (or make) numerous sizes and styles.

There really are endless things you can use to fill the space above a bed: arrangements of decorative plates, salvaged architectural elements, draped fabric, stenciled designs, artwork, you name it.

Those beautifully arrangements of plates in lolakimono's post above have set my mind whirling. I don't know if I'm smart enough to work out such artful, balanced arrangements -- but I collect old plates, and I love the look! Such an installation would look great over a bed, a chest or other piece of furniture, or on a wall just about anywhere. Of course, I've seen lots of plate hangings and have a few antique plates displayed in my home now -- but those closely arranged plates are really nice! Zowie.

We used to have something similar to this over our headboard, but finally took it down. I liked the clean look, and now don't want anything over that area. I have removed quite a few items from my walls in the last couple of years, and I like the cleaner, less cluttered look I am seeing. I really had too much on the walls, and it was making things too busy.

Re: Bedroom design question.

JMHO--I'm not a big fan of a lot of tchotchkes above the headboard (there's something to be said for negative space; 'breathing room' on the wall!) I do love the headboard of oars! Thanx lola for posting the pics--I may have to borrow that one for a project we're doing! But if you really want something above the headboard, I'd choose something very naturalistic, freeform, earthy, to complement and balance the Mission Style which is all angles and planes--an interesting branch, gnarly driftwood, a wood or iron curtain rod with vines wound and draped around it, a rustic garland. Or you could always default to botanicals in frames. Have fun and let your creativity reign! The Arts and Crafts movement loved it's natural elements!

I agree - mission style furniture goes best with outdoor/natural stuff.

Re: Bedroom design question.

Be different! Do NOTHING. Otherwise you have to get up there and dust frequently or it will sift dust down on you during the night.
