I have a simple "lucky" horse shoe hung above my bed. It's not very large, but is wide enough to accommodate a small cowboy vignette in the interior. It was a house warming gift.

Re: Bedroom design question.

I'm considering a custom stencil over my king bed.

Everyone has seen the ""Always Kiss Me Goodnight"" wall stencil. I want to create something a little more original and personalized.

If I get tired of it I can always paint over.

If you don't want to hang anything how about the 'words/sayings' that can be rubbed onto the wall?

I'm keeping a can of Kilz handy just in case it doesn't work out.

Easier than removing a tattoo.

Re: Bedroom design question.

I too have mission style furniture - and our bedroom colors are beige, brown and teal blue. We were looking for something to fill in the space over our bed and we have 10 1/2 ft ceilings so it needed to be quite large. We found an antique mariners map of the bay and coves around our town.It had some damage so DH cut it in half to get the damaged parts out - they were mildewed. Then he mounted it and made frames for them. DH has a cousin who lives nearby that is an artist and DH took them over to his house to use some of his woodworking tools. His cousin thought he could do a good job of painting a nautical type picture over a part of each map so DH left them with him. He did an amazing job of them. Mostly they have a lot of teal blue water but each also has a painting of a local fish that is popular among the local fisherman and in both pictures the fish is jumping out of the water. The paintings are watercolors and only cover about 1/4 of the map in a corner of the bottom.they are unique , very pretty, I love the colors and DH loves the subject as he is a fisherman. the maps are sepia brown so they really match well too. My point is to take your time and wait until you find something that makes you catch your breath. That will be the thing. BTW - to keep with the mission style: back to nature - bring the outside in theme my DH made the frames from bamboo. each picture is 30" wide by 48" high so they really filled the space over our king size bed.

Re: Bedroom design question.

Another idea - I have an old friend who is an interior decorator. When we lived in Pa we had a loft style entry into our house and where there should have been a wall next to the staircase there was just a railing instead. The staircase came up on that side and down to the basement on the other side. The wall opposite of the railing was very high and very low as it didn't end until the basement. My friend thought that wall was much too bare and bugged me until I bought 5 pictures to hang there in an arrangement. One large oil painting - 2 small ones that hung one above the other next to the large one. those were all framed identically then to set them off one small one , next to the 2 small ones in a totally different color way and frame. then on the wall that was perpendicular to the large wall, at the top of the stairs she put another picture that matched the odd picture of the grouping in color and frame. i loved how that group was much more interesting than just one picture would have been As my friend said - instead of one pretty picture now you have a story.

In our new home we have that picture group hanging over our sofa in a different configuration altogether, because we have such high ceilings that space was able to accommodate a large group of oil paintings.

Re: Bedroom design question.

I would do a large wreath with sconces on either side of it. The sconces could be craftsman style.

Re: Bedroom design question.

I have an upholstered headboard that goes all the way up to the ceiling.

Before we got this new headboard, we had a saying stenciled on the wall between the headboard and the ceiling. It said: "When I count my blessings, I count you twice."

Re: Bedroom design question.

I would like to thank everyone who replied. You have all given me so many good ideas.

A special thank you to both Susan Louise and lolakimono for posting the pictures.

So many of the ideas that everyone gave me will work in a couple of other rooms in our home.
