Are back flush toilets loud?

DH wants to have a full bathroom built in an area of our basement that has no 'rough-in,' i.e., no pipes exist, either drainage or supply, ready for installation of said bathroom.

He has asked me to ask if anyone out there has a "back flush" toilet.  His main concern (today) is about the noise level of one. So, if you don't mind sharing opinions and experiences, any information would certainly be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Are back flush toilets loud?

I'm guessing he's more concerned about the macerator/grinder/pump that takes the discharge and pumps it up to the drain. The folks at Saniflo have a complete kit that includes the rear discharge toilet, the grinder pump thing and is capable of handling a sink, shower/tub, washing machine, etc..

Here's a link to one of their packages that includes an 800 number you can call for more information. I'm not sure how honest they'll be about the noise level, but you can get some information. Their kit includes the toilet, grinder/pump, tank and seat for a tick under $1200. http://www.saniflostore.com/Saniflo-Sanibest-Pro-Pump-White-Elongated-Toilet-Kit-013-007-005.htm

The noise is tricky to say as you could slide the pump/tank behind a wall in an sound proofed (insulated) space which would quiet it down quite a bit. I would assume it to be somewhat comparable to a sump pump in terms of noise, but that could be wrong.

Any time you add plumbing below the sewer line you're going to have to add a pump to move the waste water/solids, but if you can do it with a rear discharge toilet you can avoid having to dynamite the concrete floor to install the plumbing which can save you more than the cost of the kit, so it's not a bad option.

Re: Are back flush toilets loud?

We have a studio apartment in our basement, and have a back flush system.  When the toilet is flushed you can hear it upstairs, but it is really only for a couple of seconds.  I don't find it annoying and never regretted putting it in.
