We used Lowe's for our window replacement project. Bought the windows at Lowe's and then we were given a list of contractors that they recommened, or we could install the windows ourselves. At first I didn't like the idea that we had to hire our own contractor for installation, but the more I thought about it, the idea seemed good since we wouldn't be relying on a Lowe's chosen contractor that we might not like. We had several contractors from their list come out to our town home, look at what we needed done and got estimates. We chose the one that seemed to be the one we could work with the best and checked out his references. It all worked well - we loved the job our chosen contractor and his crew did. We paid Lowe's for the windows and the contractor the price we had agreed on. It not only worked well for us, but we found a contractor that we could use (and trust) for other projects.

I would NEVER use HD or Lowe's just because they tack on a % for themselves when using a subcontractor.

Ever since Lowes left my brand new dishwasher sitting in the middle of my driveway, in the pouring rain, WITHOUT letting me know that they were delievering it - I have refused to utilize them for any purchases or projects. I have used Home Depot for my kitchen remodel and though there were some minor issues with the contractors installing the countertops, Home Depot stood behind the product and made everything good!

We had had horrible experiences with both Lowes and Home Depot, so much so I've sworn to only use "local" stores (not big box stores) for installs and big purchases.

We had Lowes replace a window several years and they cut through the radiant barrier and basically make the window worthless. After the window lost its gases and failed a few years later Lowes would only replace the window but to fix the barrier was on us for about $500. We eventually had all of our windows replaced last year by a real window company and they fixed the barrier for a few bucks.

We had Lowe’s install a pergo floor, a storm door, a water softener, a dishwasher, and iron fencing. The results were a mixed bag of.... pleased with the results on one hand, to major frustration due to no show contractors, to a 6 month project that was supposed to take 4 weeks.

My friend has a condo and had her kitchen redone by Lowes. They are only part time so they asked us to go take a look/photos when they were done. OMG what horrible work they did! Just the little stuff just wasn't up to snuff. We did a video chat with our friends and they ended up calling Lowes back to do the job right! I'd find another reputable contractor to do the job.

@ Montana I've used them for small jobs such as yours and they've been great. Just had a front door which includes windows on top plus a storm door and their team did the job in less than 2 hours (doors can be a nightmare so I was VERY impressed). They have a "door team" that ONLY does doors so they're experienced, efficient and run on time. No issues.
Now, would I use them for larger jobs such as windows, siding, heat/ac, bathrooms, etc? No, I would not. I've done remodeling work on 6 homes (a condo, a townhouse, 3 single family homes and one house that was on the Historic Registry in my county) and Lowes or Home Depot would never be used simply because I've seen their work and it's been horrible. I watched a few friends deal with nightmares (kitchens and bathrooms) due to botched up work from both places. In the past, they contracted with plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc that had their own business and worked for Lowes/Home Depot as a side job. I found a great plumber this way via Lowes. Maybe they still do in parts of the country but in my area, they don't- the teams are employees of Lowes/Home Depot.
I want a window company doing my windows. I want a roofer doing my roof. I want a mason and chimney expert doing my chimney. I do not want someone who normally does siding but is now going to do my chimney because his schedule is slow and needs the hours. When I know MORE than the person doing the work, that is a HUGE problem in my book. I prefer and use those who are specifically trained in that field of repair and nothing else. BUt that's me and I came to this conclusion based on what I learned after the first 2 times of remodeling a place, lol.
Good luck to you and yes, I would recommend Lowes for your job.
