Anyone used Lowe’s for a home project?

I need to replace an old window air conditioner and may also need that window repaired or replaced.  Lowe’s does this kind of work, but I have never used them and don’t know anyone who has.

If they have done work for you, did they do a good job?

I had Home Depot.... would NEVER use them again.  If Lowe's is anything like HD I would run.  If you decide to go with Lowes be sure to ask who the subcontractor is (and do research on them), make sure the subcontractor or Lowes or both have insurance on their employees.  HTH

No thought is worth thinking.....

Yes we just did. We bought our appliances through lowes. They deliver them but they have sub contractors install everything but the refrigerator and washer and dryer. The young man did a great job. He came a day earlier then expected. Because we didn’t know the exact day we were moving in they kept in contact with us. We have no complaints.

We had viynl installed from home depot at the other house. It was a mess. Never again. But we did get a contractor from HD that did some outside work and painting and they were very good. They have a list in the store to choose from.  But the carpet installers and flooring guys are basically there own contractors and are terrible.

@ Montana We bought all our appliances from Lowes and they delivered/plugged in, but I'm not sure that is a home project.  We have used Lowes for new carpet installation in the bedrooms (and ripping up old carpet).  They did a good job but agree that each store uses subcontractors, try to get recent references from Lowes.

Our next door neighbor just used Lowes for new siding; Lowes did a beautiful job and she was really pleased.  Good luck!

Montana,

I used Lowe's to install a new bathroom sink (single basin) with its counter and faucet as well as the coordinating medicine cabinet.  DREADFUL job on the sink countertop.  The splash guard was sloppily installed because it does not mesh with the countertop.

An independent contractor who saw the job told me never to use people supplied by Lowe's or Home Depot.  He said it is better to get your own contractor.

This was the first major home project I carried out after my husband passed away, and I was all nervous about it, to tell the truth.  My hubby used to do all this sort of work in our home, and thus I had no "training" in what to be on the lookout for.  Besides, I had already been hornswoggled by a rascally young painter.  Took my money and ran! I was happy to have workers who could be traced, if need be.

On the other hand, I used the people selected by Home Depot to install a new gas range, and I think they did a good job.  I think I have learned my lesson, though, when it comes to countertops, etc.  I'll choose my own contractor.

We’ve only worked with HD contractors and wonderful people to deal with. If they had bad contractors working for them, they’d be out of business. IMO

Re: Anyone used Lowe’s for a home project?

I was concerned about the subcontracting.  It does seem to be a roll of the dice.

I live in an old house and this old window air conditioner finally bit the dust.  Central air would require major duct work so that’s out.  I have considered a  Mitsubishi Split type wall air conditioner. It isn’t too costly and from what I’ve  read, not too complicated to install.

It gets hot and humid during the summer so I need to do something.

@OKPrincess

Lucky you for getting a good job done by a HD contractor.

I own stock in HD and continue to love the company, but after bitter personal experience with one of their "chosen" contractors to install several new interior and exterior doors in our former house, I would NEVER do biz with a HD contractor again

A close relative who is in the insurance services biz (handling property and casualty claims for many different insurance companies) has an even stronger negative  opinion of using  HD (or Lowe's) contractors.

After all,  common sense "should have told me" that these workers cannot get enough business on their own and need to hook up with a retailer to get jobs.  In both of the regions where I have lived up to now, the good home improvement/plumbing/etc. companies can get enough work all by themselves without extra help from a big-box store.

We’ve used Lowe’s a few times and were very satisfied with the contractors. We had storm doors installed, closet doors, bathroom vanity and shower doors.

I think with a air conditioner youwould be ok. It would have to be a liscensed person for hvac or a electrician.

Home Depot actually had its own company of contractors for flooring. They are called crew something. They are just terrible.  They have a experienced guy they use to fix all the problems of the crew team.
