Would wear white, navy or chambray Keds with a simple summer dress or skirt.

Yes. Not big chunky running shoes, but I've worn wear a cute sneakers like a printed pair of Keds with some dresses.
I'm also lucky because my first prom was in 1985, which was the year Cybil Shepherd wore orange Reeboks on the red carpet for the Emmy Awards.
I broke my toe a week before prom. I had bought killer shoes that cost more than my dress, which I bought at a thrift store and fixed up, Pretty in Pink style. I couldn't wear them on prom night, so I took a cue from Cybil and wore my grey Reeboks. I took my fancy shoes and wore them for the picture, then switched back to my sneakers.
By the end of the night, I was the only girl still wearing shoes because I was the only one in comfortable shoes.

I agree with many of you. I definitely would/do wear sneakers with a dress or skirt, but not a workout sneaker. I have shoes for running, and I would never wear those with a dress or skirt (or for anything but running/walking, really). I do, however, have several other styles of sneakers that look really fun and casual with a skirt or dress of the right sort, three seasons of the year where I am. Finally, it's a style that's not for everyone, of course, and it's OK if it's not "you."

I would if the dress or skirt is "sporty" and the sneakers are a tad flashy. I like mixing up my casual style.

No... But I am not a sloppy dresser. When I wear skirts and dresses I normally wear heels.
I am old school and believe in looking as if I have a job while I am at work, and dressing respectfully for services on Sunday.
I am not dissing people who prefer a more casual look, I am just going to do me.

At my last job my Purchasing Manager, wanted me to speak with two females on staff about how they dressed for work. I turned him down, for a few reasons. Number one I was friends with one of them, and that would have put a strain on our friendship, secondly I was not management, so it's not my job to scold/inform/encourage another co-worker on how to dress for work. I think he felt uncomfortable because he was male, he eventually had to have the private conversations with both of those employees.
I would just like to point out that wearing "a more casual look" is not equivalent to being "a sloppy dresser."

Absolutely yes! There are lots of non-athletic sneakers that are really cute and just perfect to wear for a casual look. Would I wear my running or training shoes? No.
