I have three lengths too -a short black puffer style coat, a mid length red puffer coat, and a grey maxi length puffer coat. All three were great deals, two from Marshalls and the long one from Costco.

I also have a charcoal grey dressy long wool blend coat, I really need to start wearing that more often.

I live in NYC suburb. Winters are brutal. I own many coats. I start wearing them in October and go thru June in varying degrees of heaviness. I own down vests, short car coats, mid length puffers and full length wool. A lot are from Talbots, in colors of Black, gold, winter white, navy, etc..

I have LL Bean cots with hoods. A hip length jacket and a longer coat, both down and both warm.

I live in Wisconsin and have lots of coats because we have such a varying temperature range and precipitation for three seasons.  Some are for recreation outdoors, some are for work, some for everyday.  For me, coats are as an important fashion garment as my indoor wardrobe.  My faves are Dennis Basso coats for true winter warmth, long Scandinavian Explorer  light weight down coats (love them) I purchase on line, some waterproof coats from Nuage, and long Irish wool sweater coats.

PS.  I almost forgot - I have a good selection of casual coats and vests from Costco.  They are good quality at unbelievable bargain prices.

Re: What's your winter coat like?

I have a good many coats that I rarely wear.  When it is very cold, I tend to grab my black puffy jacket with the hood.  It's not the most attractive, but it's warm and light.  My more dressy jackets and coats and my leather ones hardly ever get worn, as my lifestyle is very casual and I don't go any place much these days.

In SoCal you don't need heavy coats, I own a Charter Club Lightly Quilted Hip Length Black Jacket w/Faux Leather Trim that I purchased at Macy's about 15 yrs ago and is still like new being that it doesn't get worn too often, it is so light weight to wear when driving and running quick errands.

My friends joke that I have a coat for every 5 degrees of temperature change -- they aren't wrong!  I live in the Philly area and the temperature over the past few days have started out in the high 20's. Brrr, I never go anywhere w/o a coat.

I have a black wool coat to wear for dressier events, such as church on the holidays. The rest of the year I'd wear a puffer coat in cold weather.

Over the years, I've bought several fall/winter/spring coats that I rotate wearing depending on what the weather is like. I have a gorgeous blue boucle coat that I bought from Louis Dell'Olio's Linea line when he was a QVC. Love wearing that coat because I found a pair of gloves and a scarf that are the perfect match to it - hard to do with a blue that is NOT navy! From Petite Sophisticates - remember them - I bought a faux persian lamb short coat (hits just belong the hips). I have a Rachel Zoe faux fur (Black with a white/black fur) that hits below my knees. That's probably my dressiest coat. I've had it for years & love it!

I have a couple  of puffer coats - some are beat up and are only good enough to use to work in the yard, others are my going to be outside in the cold coat for a while but I need to look presentable.

Re: What's your winter coat like?

I downsized my coats several years ago. Even though I live in a 4 season climate, I decided I only needed 2 winter coats. One is a dressier dark grey button front wool coat, and the other is a quilted black stadium coat for casual wear. I only wear them when it's really cold. Most of the time I can get by with one of my lighter jackets because I'm just hopping in out of cars and going inside somewhere.
