You should be able to turn off the touchpad, for when you have a mouse in use.    There are two ways on most computers that I know of -

1)  on one of the 'F' buttons (top of keyboard) you will see the picture of a mouse and one with the 'line through a circle' over it.  That can be used.

2)   In the control panel there are settings for 'Mouse' and there is one you can check or uncheck to have it disable the touchpad when you are using a mouse.

If it weren't for that, I'd be in trouble because I rest my hands on the area below the keyboard!

@chickenbutt   Well, I looked those F keys over.....and don't see anything that looks like that......to tell you the truth, some of those symbols don't make any sense to me.....and I have the same trouble with the "stuff" on my car dash...............but, Thank You♥

I don't care for the touch pad, either.

I prefer to use a mouse. I have a wireless mouse connected to my Chromebook.

I have my Chromebook set up where my old desktop computer used to be, so it's convenient for me to use a mouse there, anyway.

My first choice is always the Mouse!

Di - I just took a pic of the computer I'm on right now.  See the F-5 key (just above the number 5 key)?  There is a pic like a mouse and then a slash and then a mouse with a circle (with slash through it) over it.

That's the 'F' key to which I referred yesterday.   I've noticed that it's sometimes a different F key on different computers.

Also, you can go to 'Control Panel' and you'll see the choice for Mouse Settings and you can turn it off in there.  Meanwhile, here's the picture -
